Hi everyone,
My mother was born in the UK to an Italian mother. As far as she (my mother) knows, her mother never renounced her Italian citizenship.
My mother was wondering whether she is able to easily apply for an Italian/UK dual passport?
Would my grandmother have lost her Italian citizenship when she married my grandfather?
My mother would like to acquire dual UK/Italian passport so she's able to travel to Italy easily and can pass those rights on to me one day.
Have tried looking online but it seems very confusing!
Any help welcome!
Ben
Italian Passport through mother?
Re: Italian Passport through mother?
Ben, when was your mother born? If after 1948, no problem. If before 1948, still no problem, but a lawsuit would be required.
Citizenship is lost through naturalization (or formally renouncing citizenship at an Italian consulate--unlikely). The automatic acquisition of another citizenship by birth or by marriage did not cause the loss of Italian citizenship.
If your mother is an Italian citizen, you are too. No need to wait for one day. In fact, you should apply with her, or if you are a minor, she should include you on her application.

Re: Italian Passport through mother?
Hi Mler, I thought I'd replied but I guess it hasn't gone through.
Yes, my mother (Lucia), was born after 1948 in the UK. Her parents were Francis (Born to two Italians in the UK), and Luigia (Born to two Italians in Italy).
As far as my mother knows, her mother (Luigia) never gave up her citizenship. Is there any way of checking this, and what documents do you think she'd need?
Thankyou so much for responding!
