Hello,

I am trying to confirm my grandfather's birthplace as being Augusta, Sicily in the year 1885. I've searched record sites and I can not confirm his name in that town. Any help or pointers would be appreciated for a newbie...

In the record Biff posted the wife is Vincenza (no surname) born 17 December 1900 in Augusta.
Here is the birth act of Vincenza Di Domenico, born on that date in Augusta. There is a notation of marriage in 1919, in Augusta, to Giuseppe Di Mare.

Could she have been widowed and married again in 1932 in San Francisco?
Maybe she and Carmelo knew each other from Augusta?

Yes, this is my grandfather. I think we (my wife and I) had this already. We are heading to Sicily next year and trying to find something from Sicily that shows him as being born in or from Augusta. Everything we have is from the US so far.

Thanks. We know that my grandfather's first wife was shot and killed in San Francisco. Vincenza is my mother's mother and my grandfather's second wife. Guiseppe Di Mare died and left my grandmother with 3 (DiMare) children to raise.

My wife has an Ancestry account and has also not been able to confirm any Italian records. Were they all from Syracuse or Augusta or even Catania? We would like to know before we go over there next year. My wife's family is from Messina and Taormina.

BUT... I was able to locate Carmelo's first marriage IN AUGUSTA... 1910
Here is the request for Publication of Marriage Banns for Carmelo Patania's marriage to Nunziata Timmoneri, in Augusta, Siracusa in 1910.

Groom: Carmelo Patania, 25, sailor residing in Augusta, son of deceased Andrea [Patania] and of Palma Mignosa, housewife residing in Augusta.
Bride: Nunziata Timmoneri, 20, residing in Augusta, daughter of Giuseppe Timmoneri, 60, sailor residing in Augusta, and of Sebastiana Amora housewife residing in Augusta.
The father of the bride and mother of the groom both appeared to give consent.

Banns were posted on 13, 20, 24 November.

Hi Lou,
I just stumbled on this and thought I would contribute to your research in case you are still active. I have Amaras in my family, so have traced most of them in Augusta. I know Sebastiana Amara was born 17 Sep 1861 to Vincenzo Amara (b. Abt 1826) and Domenico Patania (b. abt 1836). She married Giuseppe Timmoneri on 8 April 1883. The parents of Vincenzo Amara were Sebastiano (d. 17 oct 1874) and Giuseppa Stella. Sebastiana had 4 other siblings.
