Help reading Italian birth certificate annotations

Post by italia1901 »

Hello,

I would like to ask for your help finding the birth record for my Italian ancestor Giovanni Nicoletti. All the U.S. records state that he was born in June 1881 in San Giovanni in Fiore, Italy. He moved to the U.S. in 1901 and was married in the U.S. in 1903.

I searched the birth records of San Giovanni in Fiore in FamilySearch and was not able to find anyone with this name born in June 1881. I found the birth records shown below which have similar dates. Can you help me translate the annotations, so I can figure out if any of these are my ancestor? Or, do you have any other suggestions for how I can locate my ancestor's birth record?

Thank you for your help!

I am having trouble posting images so here is the link to the 4 images: https://imgur.com/a/B726GlU

The way to find your ancestors birth record is to first find out his father's name. This should be on his marriage record in the USA. It may be on the ship manifest.
When Italians give their age they usually give the year they are in, not the year they have completed (like we do) this makes them born in a different year than we would calculate.

The annotations are difficult to read due to fading.

The one you posted that is dated 1 April 1880 for Giovanni Nicoletti has a notation of a marriage in S. Giovanni Fiore in September 1903 to Angela Perri(sp?)

The one posted that is dated May 1881 has a notation that Giovanni Nicoletti died in S. Giovanni in September 1973.

The one that is date March 1882 has a notation that Giovanni Nicoletti married with Rosa Scigliano(?) in February 1903.

The other one (January 1881) has a notation that Pietro Giovanni Nicoletti is the legitimate son of Gabriele Salvatore Nicoletti and Maria Cava by their celebration of marriage in October 1895.

Hi,
The images can be viewed on FamilySearch, but you have to visit one of their library locations in person to access.
