I use these two sites: https://www.ganino.com/cognomi_italiani_a
http://www.conigliofamily.com/SicilianA ... nNames.htm

One is first names in Italian and one is last names.

Thank you so much Marty- this helps as he may go by Joseph on the record instead of Guiseppe right? or would he state Guiseppe Joseph (surname). I may be a little confused.
Thank you,

When looking at Latin records, such as church records of baptism and marriage, you will see Josephus.

When looking at Italian Records you will see Giuseppe.

Thank you Tessa, I did not know this and it is very helpful. I 'm sorry I did not reply yet as I just saw your response today. In fact, I am posting a Latin record today for translation which states Josef, for my 3rd great grandfather Giuseppe. Thank you again.

While we're on the Giuseppe/Joseph trail, I have noticed in numerous documents the name "Ginseppe". Although some of these can be chalked up to imprecision in a computer OCR (optical character recognition) program reading the documents, I don't think that accounts for all that I've seen. I have always treated it as if it were a mis-spelling of "Giuseppe", and I understand how a penmanship or clerical mis-reading error could produce this result that, once initiated, might be perpetuated for years or even generations.

My experience is limited, but I have never heard it spoken with the "N" pronounced. So I wondered if others with more experience have:

1. noticed the frequency of the name spelled as "Ginseppe"

2. also assumed that it was a mis-spelling of the correct "Giuseppe"

3. ever heard the name pronounced with the "N" sounded out.

1. It looks like they wrote "Ginseppe", but they always meant "Giuseppe"; it was just because of fast writing.
2. As above
3. No, never.

Believe me! :-)

Dear parkergambino and PippoM,
I saw your comment late last week on the name Ginseppe but had not had time to respond and thank you for your comment. You and I both learned from Pippo when he answered/ commented on your question. This is good information as I, too have seen errors perpetuated and it makes it difficult if not corrected right away. Thank you Pippo.

Thank you Pippo,

Sometimes I follow my intuition and find out that it was correct, but sometimes not. In this case, my intuition is confirmed (about no letter "N" in Giuseppe, and certainly not pronounced with an N sound). And every time that happens, I get a bit more confident in my intuition!
