How to trace heritage
How to trace heritage
My great grandmother came to America in the early 1900's (I have the information as to date but I dont have it on me at this moment). What I know is that at the time, she emigrated from a provence outside of Salerno that was called Centola. In trying to build my family tree, I am missing the portion prior to my great grandmother. Any ideas on how to obtain records from that particular area so that I can fill in the missing pieces?
Re: How to trace heritage
You need to identify the town she was from. In Italy all records were kept on the town level. This information may be on the Ellis Island record. Once you have the town you write, in Italian and request records. Or, if you are lucky the records have been filmed by LDS and are available on microfilm at a family history center. Then you can research yourself.
Italian research is generally not on-line, unless you are really, really lucky and find a site like James has on his ancestral town.

Debbie,
Who exactly is James? This is the second time I heard of this name and I'd like to check out his site...do you have a link?
Thanks!

Re: How to trace heritage
I have indexed all birth, marriage and death certificates of Merola, Stanziola, Vassallo and Basile from Centola during the years of 1866 - 1929. Happy to share info if you are specific who you are looking for.
Have other names as pertain to their spouses, etc.
