Below I\'ve copied the Dual Citizenship thread from the old website - it contains some good general info that many visitors would be interested in.

 I am a US citizen eligible for claiming Italian citizenship through my father. Has anybody looked into the advantages and disadvantages of doing this?

 So far my research seems to indicate that for a US citizen the advantages of dual citizenship are few (primarily the ability to work in Italy) while the disadvantages are many (military obligations, tax and legal liabilities). See this link, for example:

 as part of the overview which I have not read yet, I assume it also explains that Italian citizenship gives you EU citizenship as well and that you can traverse the borders of all the EU nations and establish residence in any of these countries more easily than an \"alien\". Peter

 Good point Peter! As an Italian citizen, I think you can move between any EU country without a visa.
 
 Also, on further research, I find that my first message is in error: I\'m not \"eligible for Italian citizenship\" - I have been an Italian citizen since birth, although born in the US, by definition of Italian law under Category 1):

 So, by my reading I already have dual citizenship; it\'s just a matter of applying for an Italian passport.
 
 Note that there is a date restriction if you inherit through your mother rather than your father.

 according to that then even though my father and mother were born in the USA and did not renounce their italian citizenship and neither did my grandparents, then I too can apply for an Italian passport...although at this point in my life it is academic...like an old woman weighing herself.  Yes - I\'m having similar thoughts.
 Although I plan to return to Italy for a few weeks in the spring (using a US passport), I have not seen a real advantage to having an Italian one also. As an Italian citizen, I guess I wouldn\'t have to turn over my passport every time I registered at a hotel, but the only way to prove I\'m Italian would be to show my Italian passport. I don\'t feel that handing over my US passport is that big of a burden.
 
 Also, I\'ve heard that none of the EU countries require US citizens to have a visa anymore, so I don\'t see any advantages to using an Italian passport to travel between them.
 
 Anybody with US & Italian passports have any experiences to report?

 Hi,
 maybe dual citizenship offers no great advantages for an american citizen, but it would be a great advantage for a third world country citizen. You wouldn\'t need visas to travel to a lot of countries, USA included, I guess.

 Nothing really since I am by nature happy and horizontal and acquiring dual nationality would be work!!!(shudder). Peter

 Some interesting angles to consider:
 
 ==> military conscription (for you and/or your children)
 
 ==> taxes (does the other country make extraterritorial tax claims like the US does?)
 
 ==> freedom to travel (restrictions on exit)
 
 ==> freedom of expression, worship, etc. (including possible problems if your perfectly legal behavior within the US comes to the attention of the other country\'s officials)
 
 ==> problems back in the US -- your US citizenship may not be at risk, but (for example) you might have problems getting a security clearance for sensitive government employment
