SOLOMITA [SOLOMITO]

Post by toilegirl »

Looking for descendants of Vincenzo SOLOMITA and Anna RANALDO. My gggrandfather Cyriacus [Ciriaco] SOLOMITA [b.1829] was one of their children. I am looking for information on other possible children. Vincenzo and Anna were probably born in the very late 1700's or early 1800's.
Trying to connect SOLOMITA [SOLOMITO] families originating from the Gesualdo,Avellino, Campania, ITALY area.

There are 33 Solomita surnamed listings in Gesualdo. If you go to www.paginebianche.it and insert Solomita in the first line and Gesualdo in the third line and click CERCA the listings will come up by name, address and telephone number. Civil records in Southern Italy commenced in the period 1803-1805 and prior to that the only records were in the churches as a result of the mandate of the council of Trent that churches were to maintain a parish census/register of parishoners in a book Libri d"anima(book of souls). That book is a hit or miss matter but birth, baptism, marriage and death records were also maintained. If you wish to obtain any civil records after the early 1800 period in Gesualdo you could write a letter in Italian to the Ufficio di Stato Civiel, Comune di Gesualdo Postale 83040, Provincia Avellino, Campania, Italy and include a self addressed envelope and $5.00 EURO or US or postal coupons. If you cannot write in Italian then get back to me and I will supply you with that information. Peter

I have relatives that originated in Gesualdo Avellino, the last name was told to me as "Solomito". I believe there were three siblings born in the late 1800's with the names Concetta, John, Rosangelo.

Concetta is my great grand mother. I also believe that the father of the siblings may have been named John (or the Italian version therof)

Hi Carl,

Welcome to the forum. What kind of information are you searching for? Do you need manifests, census records, or are you looking for Italian records? Where did Concetta settle? What was her husband's name? We can better help you if we know what your goals are?

Carl -
My Vincenzo SOLOMITO had 2 sisters Concetta and Rosa Solomito.
SOLOMITA is the correct spelling and for some reason just a very few families that migrated to the USA spell it SOLOMITO mine was one. The a was mistaken for an o on the ship manifests likely.
Vincenzo,Concetta and Rosa were all born in Gesualdo and they brought their widowed mother Rosangela FORGIONE SOLOMITA with them when they came to America.
They all married FAMIGLIETTI siblings from Frigento before immigrating to America.
Where are you located?

Thanks to all for the response, I hope i will resond more quickly in the future...

Peter,
Thanks for the link to the italian telephone listings, I found the 33 Solomita's and also the Decicco's. Since my Italian is poor I would like to take you up on your offer to help me write the registry for some further information? Please let me know how to follow-up with you?

Mellissa,
It is quite possible that our searches / families may be connected as the names are similar in traditionally this may prove a valubale clue.

Concetta Solomita was a sister to Giovanni (John) Solomita who had four children and originatied from Gesualdo Avellino migrating to the New York Area (Brooklyn - Long Isaland). I believe giovanni married a Louisa, but, do not have the Louisa's maiden name. The children, if I remember correctly were Louisa, Rosangela, Giovanni (or John) and ? (I'll check my records on the fourth.)

Concetta waqs born about 1861 and married a man named Pasquale DeCicco. They had two children; Vincenzo and Marriucianni (Mary). Mary is my grandmother.

I am looking for the link in the Gesualdo Avellino area; a name, a church, or any other informatino so that I can continue the search.

I have contact with giovanni's great grandson and will try and reach him by email if his email address is still valid.

Thanks again and please let me know any further info you can share.

Best regards, Carl

I have relatives that are definitely related.

In the late 1890's to the early 1900's my Solomita (solomito - male) relatives came through ellis Island. The majority dwelled on Long Island near Garden City.

My Grandmother, Mariuciani DeCicco's mother was a Solomita. Her first name was Concetta. She had a brother giovanni (John) and a sister Rosa. My grandmother had one brother, Vincenzo. All were born in Gesulado Avellino Italy.

Please let me know some lines indicating who is who';s mother and maybe you can help me and I can help you?

best regards,

Carlo

Hi Melissa,

I believe your vincenzo is my vincenzo also.

Concetta Solomita was my great-grandmother. As indicated in previous post. She married Pasquale DeCicco and had two children, Mariucciani (Mary)and Vincenzo (He went by the name James).

Both children ended up in New Bedford Massachusetts a part of what was known as Bristol Massachusetts.

Concetta had a sister Louisa and a brother Giovanni (John). I had met Louisa's children near Garden City Long Isalnd New York about twenty years prior. Louisa had a daughter named Louisa who married a man named Tom Butler.

let me know what else yo have found out.

best regards,

Carl
