New here, looking for surname Di Benedetto

Post by evilynn »

I have an ancestry account and that has made this search a lot easier.

Having said that, I have lots of questions about the place in Italy my great-grandparents came from.

Pasquale Di Benedetto (born 1873) immigrated to America in the year 1900 from Fragneto l'Abate, in the Province of Benevento in the Italian region Campania.

The ship that carried from was called the Werra, arrival date was September 12, 1900.

He listed his destination as Buffalo, New York (to live with a brother), address is 108 Thompson Street *had no idea before now). He settled with his wife Maria (who came over a year later in East Boston Massachusetts.

I also show that he married Maria when he was 18, in the year 1890.

I can't seem to find any records in Italy about my great-grandparents. I know Pasquale's last residence was Fragneto l' Abate but that doesn't mean he grew up there.

Not sure where to start. There are also many variations on the spelling of the last name. At least here in America.

The spelling was eventually changed to Debeneditto.

Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome! :-)

You can write directly to the comune (town) to request records, but you must know the EXACT town in which your ancestors were born. When you are sure of the birthplace, we can help you with address of town hall, and form letters in Italian.

If Pasquale had a Social Security #, you can request his SS application which should have his place of birth and his parents' names.
Request online at this site:

Thank you! I am glad to be here.

I do not know Maria's maiden name, unfortunately. She was born in 1871, I believe.

I think they had a daughter named Clara, and one named Regenta when they lived in Italy. Both girls ended up in America with the family. Regenta died giving birth to twins I think.
The rest of the children were born in Mass.

Yes, that was their son John. They also had Anna, and my grandfather Louis. I didn't know any of them unfortunately.

It's strange but I can't seem to find any ss# associated with Maria or Pasquale. No death certificates either. Pasquale lived until 1964.

Maria died prior to my mother's birth in 1952.

I just noticed that Maria's last name is different on that link from FamilySearch. Was that a typo?

Hmmm. Thanks again for all the wonderful responses. This is great!

Great!
We may have enough clues to find a manifest for Maria and the daughters :D

This record may help a bit
I have noticed that although the records may be typed, they are often misspelled a bit
Valarie'

Here's the same record with more info from NEHGS (subscription)

I am trying variations on Domenichetto. Not sure if that is a real surname, assuming the person mistyped it of course.

What a great lead. Shows they were both from Caserta. That's a big help right there.

This is a neat website for trying out different letter combinations for surnames by region, I think you can search with as few as 3 letters?

I know my mother said Clara seemed to be much older than the other kids. Clara married a man named John Bell. I think they lived in Philadelphia?

Maybe Regenta was married too? I wish I was in Boston so I could look at the graves. Grrr.
