Re: Looking for relatives and history Sammartino & Casci
Hi Dennis, hope you are well. I found letters written by Antonio Sammartino, brother of my Ggrandfather Giuseppe. Thru these letters, I learnt that Antonio married Anna 4 ov 1906, and had 3 children, Alfonso, who established himself in Montana, Francesca, who lived in the same town of her parents, Pueblo, Co; and Stella, who lived in Oklahoma.
In other letters, I learned that Angelina and Ersilia, sisters of Antonio and Giuseppe, lived also in Pueblo, and had children there (I dont know how many). Rosa, instead, lived in New York. The letters are very exciting. I scanned them and can mail them to you.
Alfonso had 4 children. Francesca 3 and Stella also 3. So, there are some Sammartinos probably in Montana that are relatives.
Kindest regards, ad really hope to hear from you sometime soon. Daniel

Ersilia, who is my great grand mother, Married Nicolo (Nick) Casciola. They lived in Pueblo and had 7 children (I think). Concettina, Teresa (who died in an accident at age 2), Henry (my grand father), Dominick (Danny), Antoinette (Annette), Concepcion (unsure if this actually a separate child or a different name for one of the girls, and Virginia (who died of leukemia and in whom after my mother was named).
Concettina married Anthony DiPietro and had three children, Peter, Josephine, and Henry.
Henry married Emma Lescano and they had three children: Virginia (my mother), Sharon, and Cindy. My Mother married Dennis Bennett and I have a brother Jeff and a sister Becky. I have no children.
Danny had no children that I am aware of.
Annette married Joe Benedetti and they had two children Robert and Charles.
I will see what else I can dig up. Thanks for the copies of the documents

You could also review your family’s records on microfilm.
Your nearest Family History Center has records for Sant'Eusanio Forconese on microfilm.
The cost is about $6 mo (rent), you’ll need to go to the center to order & view them.

Re: Looking for relatives and history Sammartino & Casciola
Hi Sammartino,
In case you're still around, do you happen to know the names of any of the Sammartino brothers who came to the US? Henry (Enrico) Sammartino married one of my distant cousins, Martha Ferrando, in 1903. Henry was born in Agnone in 1878, learned the silver-smithing trade there. He came to Youngstown, Ohio and became a wealthy diamond merchant. We just discovered that he was murdered on February 11, 1931 on an ocean liner. He lost $1300 in a fifteen-minute poker game and accused one of the card-sharks of cheating. He was later found hanged in his stateroom. The Youngstown coroner discovered that he had a fractured skull, so the cause of death was changed from suicide to murder.
Henry's death was reported in two-dozen newspapers from Ohio to California. It was investigated by the FBI and the Italian consulate in Cleveland; Henry never naturalized and retained his Italian citizenship. One article said that his room-mate on the ship was one of Al Capone's henchmen! A Youngstown investigator was "shadowed" during his trip from the boat back to Youngstown, and he was "pressed" to drop his case, saying there were "powers" behind the card sharks. The card sharks who fleeced Henry obtained "the most famous criminal lawyers in the south" for their defense, so they were well-connected to the Underworld.
By the way, Martha Ferrando's younger brother, Joseph, was shot to death in Coalburg, Ohio by a gunman from Agnone. It seems that the poor Ferrando family was cursed!
