Can someone tell me the meaning of "Gio: Batta". It appears to be a given name.

It is normally short for Giovanni Battista (John Baptist)

I believe the meaning is Giovanni=John and Battista=Baptist for John the Baptist.

I've seen Gio: in very old records where it stood for Giovanni, or Gian in a compound surname.
