Obtaining Birth Certificates from Italy

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Obtaining Birth Certificates from Italy

Post by Ranuncolo13 »

For my dual citizenship case, I need to obtain the birth certificates for my great grandparents, Antonino Augello born 1905 , and Maria Bianco born 1903 , both in Trapani, Trapani, Sicilia, Italy.

My question is, is there some place I need to write to in Italy for these records (which I'm not exactly fluent in Italian language...) or can I go through the Italian Consulate?

I see now that no one replied to your request.
No, the consulate doesn't ask certificates. You must present the certificates to the consulate.
You should ask exactly which documents are required by your consulate (it may be some differences between the various consulates) (you may find this info probably on the consulate website).
Can you tell which is the Consulate for your area of residence?
Then you should ask the certificate for this use of citizenship request to the Comune, that will send the certificate printed on paper and sent by mail (as consulates still want paper documents and not sent by e-mai)
The certificates are free of charge, but some comuni ask a payment for postage (to send the document) and it may be difficult to pay.
Of course there are also agencies to do this work, in Italy and abroad, but if you need only some certificates I think you may ask them yourself.

On his WW2 draft card, "Anthony" Augello notes his date of birth as 5 August 1905, and place of birth as Santa Ninfa, which is a town in Trapani province.

Here's a link to his birth record in Santa Ninfa:

I'll also check for Maria Bianco's birth record. So you'll need to write to the office in Santa Ninfa to request birth records.

http://www.comune.santaninfa.tp.it/sant ... o/numero/5

As they only list a "PEC" email, a fax or snail mail request will be necessary, as PEC email requires you to be registered as a PEC user.

I found a Maria Bianco born 15 August, 1903 (No. 191) born in Santa Ninfa. As this is such a common name, it would be helpful if you knew her parents' names to be sure this is the correct record. The parents here are Francesco Bianco and his wife Antonia Accardi (?)....last name a bit unclear.

Yes, those are Maria's parents.

From everything I've researched, I believe I specifically will need actual copies of these documents because I have a 1948 case so I'll be needing to go through the courts with the evidence.

Thank you everyone for the links though!

For a 1948 case, you'll be working with an attorney. If you forward the links, the attorney's office will make short work of obtaining the documents in the appropriate format. Best of luck!
