Mannassi - Lake Como

Post by Marcuswelby »

I'm trying to find any Mannassi's that may still be alive in the Dongo area of Lake Como?

I am coming to Italy in September with my husband in search of any surviving Mannassi's from the Dongo area, the family is on my husband's paternal side.

The surname is spelled with one "n" - MANASSI

In the Italian phone book (landlines only) there is ONE listing for Manassi in the comune of Gravedona, Como, which is just north of Dongo along Lake Como. It is the only private listing for the area near Dongo.
You may wish to write to this "potential" relative to make an inquiry.

Many thanks Tessa for replying to me, my husband's grandmother was Martha Mannassi and she definitley had to "N's" in her surname so perhaps the Manassi's in Gravedona are not from the same family but I will definitely contact them. Her grandfather Luigi Benjamin Mannassi was born in Dongo in 1842, thanks again

I am sure you are correct that she spelled her name with 2 "n"

However, the surname with 2 "n" does NOT exist in Italy.

You can check here to see the distribution of surnames.
Scroll down and enter the surname. You will get a map showing locations of the name.

Try it with and without the extra "n"
https://www.cognomix.it/mappe-dei-cognomi-italiani

Also...
Here are the towns/provinces in Lombardy Region that have the surname Manassi today.
NONE have the surname Mannassi.

Manassi 13.74 Milano Milano
Manassi 9.92 Dongo Como
Manassi 8.43 Calvisano Brescia
Manassi 7.05 Vobarno Brescia
Manassi 6.96 Gravedona ed Uniti Como
Manassi 5.32 Capriolo Brescia
Manassi 2.66 Stazzona Como
Manassi 2.59 Gussago Brescia
Manassi 2.53 Mandello del Lario Lecco
Manassi 2.51 Vimodrone Milano
Manassi 2.50 Azzate Varese
Manassi 2.35 Salò Brescia
Manassi 2.31 Moltrasio Como
Manassi 2.24 Castiglione d'Intelvi Como
Manassi 2.13 San Siro Como

Can you tell me the date of birth of the GM? or her father?

Hello Tessa

Apologies if I miss a few words, my laptop is playing Up!!!

Martha's father was Joseph, they were both born in Liverpool, England, her grand father Luigi Benjamin was born on 14 July 1842 in Dongo, his father Giosue born in 1820 we think, also in Dongo.

I haven't come across a Paolo or Martina as a relative only seen their names whilst I've been searching.

They must have added an extra "N" at some point when they were over here, there are also other spellings with just 1 "S" and also "Mannasse", but from now on I will take it that it should only have the 1 "N".

I will look at the other information that you have given me, thank you very much indeed for everything

So Martha and her father, Joseph, were born in London.
What years?
What was Joseph's wife's name (Martha's mother?)

Martha was born in 1907 in Liverpool and her father Joseph 1872, also in Liverpool.
Joseph's wife was Anne Power born 1869 in Kilkenny, Ireland.
I do have all 3 exact dates of birth if needed.

Thank you for that information...

Have you found Luigi Benjamin (Beniamino most likely) Mannassi in the UK Census?
And did Luigi marry in UK?

Records for Dongo are very limited online, as I am sure you have discovered.
