help needed with Latin baptism

Post by delfgill »

Hi,

Can someone please help with a Latin baptism record? I’m trying to decipher the maiden name of the child’s mother (in parentheses) and the names of the sponsors. The record is through FamilySearch. I haven’t been able to find it elsewhere.

Page 38, right hand side, second record from the top, dated April 23, 1893, baptism of Catharina:

https://www.familysearch.org/records/im ... eView=true

Many thanks!

I took a LONG look at this - and it stumps me.
I then tried to find a marriage for the couple in this church register - or a confirmation of any of their children in the Church register - hoping that the mother's maiden name would appear there.

Initially, I thought the first letter was an "I" - but in the entry above is the name Helena, and the initial letter in the surname you are trying to decipher resembles the "H" in Helena.

What other information can you give us about the couple Michaele Ross and Louisa(SP)?

The only records I have for Michael and Louisa is with the Ross name. The marriage record for her son shows her name as Ruccia but I don't think that's correct.

I thought her name on the baptism record might be Iletiana. And then I thought: what if it was a notation to indicate she was Italiano.

The family’s original surname was Fucarelli or Fuccarelli, but they predominantly went by the name Ross. It’s unclear whether they legally changed their name when they naturalized, or if they used the name Ross when convenient.

In the same church register, I’ve been lucky to find additional Fucarelli baptismal records for the children of Michael’s brother, Pasquale. Pasquale was known by the name John Ross.

I have plenty of Ross records for the family, but it’s taken me a year to finally find their true name… I’m beyond excited :)

Ah, yes, I saw the Fucarelli surname in the registers...

I'll take another look through the registry in case I missed something.
