Burials at Sea

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Burials at Sea

Post by pjy2jc »

Hello, all.

My grandmother Antonia Teofilo Conti from Conversano, Italy died on the steamer Augustus in 1931. The cause of death is listed as tuberculosis. The ship left from the port of New York. Her death record from Ancestor's Portal:
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 76/0Mq3lkD

We were always told that she was buried at sea. I have not found any proof for this. Does anyone have any ideas where I can look? I've tried The National Archives, but I am only finding incoming ships to America, not outgoing. I've also tried Find a Grave. We also understood that her son Robert (my father) who was only five years old was with her. If he was, I would assume I would find a record for him at Ellis Island in 1931, but I haven't.

I have posted about this before and am hoping some fresh eyes might inspect her death record for me.

Thank you.
Christina
