My Great Grandfather was born in Poggioreale, Trapani. He came to America, but I don't know the date or how he arrived. I am looking for any and all information on the family name/names as I am planning to travel to Sicily in the next year or two and would love to discover the towns my family was from. Here is what I know:
Great Grandfather: Frank Emmite - Born 1882 in Poggioreale, Trapani. Married to Vincithia Imbraguglio in Galveston, Texas in 1903
2nd Great Grandfather: Antonio Immitti - Born in 1835 in Cefalu, Palermo. Married to Rosa Verderame from Cefalu
3rd Great Grandfather: Giuseppe Immiti - Born in 1813 in Mazzarbo, Venezia. Married to Antonina Taormina from Palermo.
Any information on these family lines would be appreciated.

It seems that in Italy such surnames are not present. Maybe that's how the surname was spelled after emigration. I've checked records from Poggioreale

and in the births of years 1880-1883 could not find Frank. The problem is that I couldn't even find someone with a similar surname.

Where did you find the information that Giuseppe was born in Mazzarbo (Venice). Can you post the related document?Michael Falco wrote: 22 Feb 2024, 17:04 ...

Where and when did Giuseppe marry Antonina Taormina?

Have you considered searching for alternative spellings or variations of the surname?PippoM wrote: 04 Mar 2024, 15:54 It seems that in Italy such surnames are not present. Maybe that's how the surname was spelled after emigration. I've checked records from Poggioreale

It sounds like an exciting journey to trace your family roots! You have some great details already, which should be helpful for your research. Since your Great Grandfather was from Poggioreale, Trapani, you might want to start by reaching out to local municipal offices (Ufficio dello Stato Civile) in Poggioreale or nearby areas for birth, marriage, and emigration records.

Thank you, ColeHarry! Yes, the Ufficio dello Stato Civile records search is a great idea. I will try to contact them and hopefully learn more about my family background. If you have experience with record searches in Italy, I would love your advice!

Some surnames may have originated from immigrants or historical migrations and thus may not be recognized in traditional Italian contexts.
