Luigi Rizzica (Rizzico)

Hello everyone,

I am interested in the surname "Rizzica". My GGF Luigi Rizzica emigrated from Italy and arrived at Ellis Island on May 10, 1912, settling in Rutland, Vermont. Early records in the United States show his surname is "Rizzica" later records "Rizzico". He used the date of birth June 21st - the years vary from 1894-1896.

On the ship manifest, he lists Oppido as his last permanent address and subsequent US records state he was born in Oppido Mamertina. Unfortunately, I have not been able to locate his birth record.

I was able to locate the church records for his marriage to my GGM Filomena Bizzaro on September 5, 1915 in Saint Peter's Catholic Church, Rutland, Vermont. The marriage records state his name is Luigi Rizzica, and he was "Bap: Church of the Annungiata, Village of Oppido, Prov of Reggio, Italy Mar 1894 Rizzica, Giuseppe & Antonoro, Carmela". I believe the church name was misspelled and should be "Annunziata".

His obituary of February 9, 1964 states he had two brothers and a sister in Italy.

Although I have been able to locate records for my GGM Filomena, I haven't been able to locate any for my GGF Luigi or of his family members prior to his arrival in the United States.

Any recommendations on locating church records for the Church of the Annunziata or information on the surname Rizzica would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

The correct surname is Rizzica as you first stated and is present in Oppido Mamertina.
Do you know the name of Luigi’s parents.

My GGF Luigi’s parents are stated as follows:

Rizzica, Giuseppe and Antonoro, Carmela
