Hello
Thank you for your great site! I'm new to genealogy and getting started on my family surnames. I'm looking for some help with the history and etymology of the cognome: MAGLIERE. I know maglia is to "knit," but not sure where to go from there. Thanks to the group here and all the knowledge they have to help!
surname origin and etymology help please
Re: surname origin and etymology help please
Hello,
Are you sure of the correct spelling of the surname?
Could it be “Maglieri”?
From where? Molise?

Re: surname origin and etymology help please
Surnames like Magliari and Magliero derive from the metal trades and specifically to “nail maker,” according to Joseph C Fucilla in his book Our Italian surnames. So the surname you are inquiring about seems to be a variation in spelling, which may have changed in the U.S.

Maglieri is the way the name is spelled most often. Magliere is on the birth documents from Sepino, in Molise. Thanks for the Joseph Fucilla book mention. I’ll look for it to purchase. And thanks for the link with Italian surname information. I appreciate the help from all of you here.
