Re: the spelling of mary
To my knowledge there's only one spelling in Italian: Maria.jolynn wrote:hello all, can mary be spelt marie in italy, i know it is spelt maria but can it be spelt marie and if so would this be in a particular area. thanks again, john
Marie is French.
Re: the spelling of mary
hello livio, the problem is that on her marriage cert. it says mary conte but on her headstone it says marie guiseppa pearson, nee conte, this spelling of her name marie does not square with her other names which are guiseppa conte, of italian origin, what do you think. thanks john
Re: the spelling of mary
John,
My name is Mary Jo. My maternal grandmother was Maria Giuseppa, sometimes Maria Giusippina. My paternal grandmother was Giusippina. it is all the same. You can americanize it as Mary Jo, Mary, Marie, Josephine, etc. One of my relatives came over as M. Giuseppa. It can be any or all. You are dealing with the same person.
Another Mary Jo

Re: the spelling of mary
Nee Conte: Nee is French, it translates Nata Conte, Born Conte.jolynn wrote:hello livio, the problem is that on her marriage cert. it says mary conte but on her headstone it says marie guiseppa pearson, nee conte, this spelling of her name marie does not square with her other names which are guiseppa conte, of italian origin, what do you think. thanks john
And it should be Giuseppa, not Guiseppa.
I suspect that Mary had some French roots...
Re: the spelling of mary
hello all, first of all thankyou for your input, i put the word nee into the sentence to denote her maiden name, after reading mary jo,s remarks i must agree with her, since 1908 i have found out through certain records that mary was written on her marriage cert. maria on a birth marriage and death index and marie on her headstone, i think you are prob. right when you say that someone spelt it wrong. why would guiseppa be spelt wrong, does that not mean josephine in english. because i don,t know where she came from in italy i am trying to find if names which i know can help push me in the right direction. the names i have relating to the italian side would have been verbally given to the registrar and they would have written it down thus the scope for spelling mistakes, this is what i have to go on and i have to keep trying, maria was born on the 10 feb 1892 and she and her sister felicella conte came to england between 1901 and 1908 when they both married english men in grimsby lincolnshire, other italian names attributed to them where aquilla, demarris, raphael, angelina all used as christian names and the surename dinella. has anyone any thoughts, thankyou all again, regards john

Re: the spelling of mary
Guiseppa does not exist in Italian, by the way it is a common misspelling of the name Giuseppa, which, you are right means Josephine. The same apply for the corresponding male name, Giuseppe.
I believe that the misspelling is due to the hand-writing..., especially when the letters are inclined toward right. The little dot that is over the i in this case moves right... See picture: http://aycu29.webshots.com/image/18108/ ... 709_rs.jpg
