Alicia,
The people listed online on the familysearch.org website are only those from certain public records (e.g. social security death records), from submissions by people researcing their families over the years, and submissions by members of the Mormon faith for baptism purposes. These listings are a tiny tiny fraction of the people available in the microfilms. The microfilms usually contain listings of all residents from a village. Thus, for a specific village, there could be 6000 listings in the microfilms, but only 100 online that were submitted by researchers.

Re: Family History Library
Oh I see. I better get over there and start looking at microfilms then. Do you know if these are the same microfilms used by genealogists?

Re: Family History Library
Yes they are. The microfilms generally contain photographic copies of the actual documents you would see if you visited your ancestral village. The newest is generally for the year 1923 but the oldest can go back to the 1500s - 1600s depending on the village.
Before you go, visit Familysearch.org again and obtain the microfilm numbers for the villages you are interested in.

You should spent some time exploring the whole site because it is full of useful info, however here is the link to the microfilm catalog.

Re: Family History Library
From the home page, http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp, click "Search Records" and then "Library Catalog". Click "Place Search" and enter, for example, "vasto". On the next page, click the most likely link, "Italy, Chieti, Vasto"; on the next page, click the link alongside Topics - "Italy, Chieti, Vasto - Civil registration". The link on the next page (Registri dello stato civile, 1809-1900 ) indicates that civil records (birth, marriage, death) are available for the years 1809 - 1900. Clicking that link tells you that there are 93 rolls of 35mm microfilm in total ("in 93 bobine di microfilm ; 35 mm.") On the top-right of this page you will see a button labeled "View FIlm Notes" - click this to see a complete listing of the 93 films. The film number is in the column on the right.DeFilippis78 wrote:Im not quite sure how to do that. Im new to that website. I need the town of Vasto and Termoli. Once you know the film numbers of interest, you go to your local Family History Center and place an order to have those films delivered to the center. Typically takes a few weeks for them to arrive.

Re: Family History Library
Many sections of the microfilms also have copied the indexes (by name) of the original record books. If you find the proper microfilm, go to the marriages sections and see if their names appear in the indexes -- will usually tell you the year and the page number in which the record appears. With common names though, you will have to go back and forth from the index to the page until you think you have hit the right one.
