This may or may not be the town of birth, Dan.

Maybe it's supposed to be Titusville Pa. I don't see anything close to the spelling on the manifest. I have to look at a map to see the location of that city though.

However, I believe the correct spell of the lastname was D'Affuso....
And possible the place of origin was the town of Castroregio, in the province of Cosenza, Calabria region:

Albanian origin....

That town is quite a distance from the area, so probably that isn't it.

Peg, Laura,

I can't tell you how much it means to me that you have provided all of this information in such a short amount of time. I didn't know how to connect the 1920 census name to the Ellis Island name, but you've done that. Plus, to have confirmed a place in Italy for me to continue my research, just leaves me speechless. I was never able to find a place in Italy.

I am so grateful to you both.

Oh Dan...
Thank you for your words, me and the other members here are really happy to help...

You're lucky also because the Mormons microfilmed the civil registrations of the town of Castroregio, so you'll be able to check by yourself the microfilms and find the birth and marriage acts of your ancestors....

Title Registri dello stato civile di Castroregio (Cosenza), 1813-1913
Authors Castroregio (Cosenza). Ufficio dello stato civile (Main Author)

I'm sure that Peg will write you how to do if you are not familiar with the Family History centers...

and.. about the lastname... it's pretty rare ... digit D'Affuso in Cognome and you'll see the actual distribution in all Italy...

http://www.gens.labo.net/

Looks like it's concentrated in the Basilicata region, Castroregio is very near to the boarder of this region...

Use this useful site to see how many D'affuso are present today in the Calabria and Basilicata region:

http://italia.indettaglio.it/eng/cognomi/cognomi.html

However from the arrival manifests it seems your ancestors were surely coming from Castroregio....

Good luck with your research!

It just gets better. Thank you.

I've never used a Family History center and would appreciate any advice.

Also, that surname distribution is very interesting. Thanks!

Hi Dan
I see you want to try to use a Family History Center. The centers are run by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. Anyone can use their research centers. First you need to determine if there is a center close to where you live. In order to do that, go to their official website which is www.familysearch.org

Across the top of their homepage, you will see the category which says Library. The drop down box from that category has an option for centers. Once you click on that, you can then type in your location to see where there is a center close to your home.

Currently I believe most centers are charging about $5.50 to rent a roll of microfilm which takes 2 to 3 weeks to be sent to your local center from the main Mormon library in Salt Lake City Utah. Each center has varying types of equipment. Some smaller centers do not have printers, which means there is no way to print a document off of the microfilm. Others have more sophisticated equipment, including a way to use a flash drive, which you can carry with you to the center, to copy records and then view them on your computer at home. Some have machines that magnify the records. Others do not, so it always wise to carry a hand held magnifying glass with you. Once you find out which center is closest to you, you can then phone the center and ask specific questions about their facility. You have to go there in person to order the microfilms and pay for them. The center then calls you when the microfilm has been shipped to them from Salt Lake.

To get the specific microfilm numbers that you want to rent, you can do this from your home before going to the center so that you don't waste your time doing that there. On the same website, go the category at the top where it says "Search Records." You then get a drop down box which says Library Catalog. When you click on that, the next screen comes up. Put your town name in the top box and Italy in the bottom box. Then hit the search button. When you see Italy, Cosenza, Castroregio-Civil Registration, click on that. The next screen will tell you the dates that Laura gave you above which is 1813 to 1913. Click on that and then on the next screen click on "View Film Notes." You will then get a list of the 8 microfilms which are available for your town.

The microfilms may be difficult to research, so it is best to not overload yourself when doing it for the first time. Choose a film which has records for a date that you believe you know. Since you have a birth year of 1883, you may want to rent the film that has Nati with a wide range of years that include 1883. The only thing is is that there is no guarantee what the format of these records will be. They may be form records with fill in the blanks with the names written in the margin, or they could be completely handwritten with no names and no indexes on the films. You just never know what you are going to get, as the records vary from one town to another. If you could at least locate the records and get the copies, you could get help from those of us on this forum who have experience reading these records from microfilm. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to post them.

Thanks again, Laura, for helping to find Dan so many records.

I forgot to mention that these local centers are staffed by volunteers, so their days and hours of operation vary from center to center. That information should be listed along with the address of the center, but always best to check by phone with the local center to make sure its hours haven't changed.

Actually I just remembered that Laura found you a WWI draft registration card which has an exact date of birth, so I would try to find that record on the film first. That date may or may be accurate, but I have found that the cards I have in possession have pretty accurate dates of birth on them. Others may not agree with me. If you find his birth record, that would give you the names of his parents and get you back another generation on his line. I think we can also estimate their year of marriage from the census info, but since I haven't looked at that info since early this morning, I don't recall offhand the estimated year of marriage. If you could find the marriage record, you would then get both sets of parents' names and possibly additional information about the couple and their parents.

The 1910 census is saying they were married for 7 years. Since the first son, Joseph, was born in Nov of 1903, according to the social security index, which you can view by going to www.rootsweb.com

I think it's safe to say that they married in the early part of 1903. So I would use that estimate in looking for their marriage record on the microfilm.

Matrimoni 1901-1909, 1912-1913, 1910; Morti 1866-1910 FHL INTL Film # 1917785 Items 1 - 2

For his birth record:
Nati 1866-1868, 1874-1876, 1879-1910; Pubblicazioni 1866-1910; Matrimoni 1867-1900 FHL INTL Film #1917784 Items 2 - 4

Hi, again.

Thanks for the information on the use of the Family History Center. There is a local center less than 20 mi from my house and it's more or less on my way to/from work.

I hope to give them a call this week and start the process to get a look at the microfilm.
