getting dual citizenship

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

. . . and since your mother arrived in the U.S. as a minor, you will have to check the records for both her and her father. If her father naturalized before she reached the age of majority, she naturalized as well.

Frank, I've been out of town since last Saturday, so I am a bit late on this. Anyway, here are the two pages of the passenger manifest for Maria and family. (click the thumbnails for full size, then right-click to save to your computer)

Looking at the "penciled in" notations against several of the siblings, it appears that most of them naturalized (or at least began the process) in their own right. Michela, Maria's younger sister, requested a Certificate of Arrival (that's what the notations refer to) in 1942 and older brother Francesco in 1940. I take this as a very good sign that noe of these children were minors when Rafaele and Tomasina naturalized. Unfortunately, Rafaele and Tomasina's entries are undated (it happens...) so we don't have any other clue as to when they did so.

Frank, it seems that someone else is researching your family. :)

This Ancestry . com Family Tree should be of interest.

As a practical matter, the most important step which lies before you is to prove the exact date of Maria's naturalization or to prove that she never naturalized.

If she did naturalize, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service ( http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/ ... 18190aRCRD ) will have copies of the records. You can begin the process of locating records by ordering an "Index Search" here https://genealogy.uscis.dhs.gov/ If naturalization records are found (a "C File"), you then follow up with an actual "Record Request".

If USCIS cannot find records, you will receive a letter to that effect. Most consulates require that you obtain additional "No Records Found" letters from the US National Archives and from the local courts for every county in which your ancestor resided.

Ideally, Maria naturalized and did so after your birth. Less ideal would be that she never naturalized; less ideal only because it is harder to prove a negative than to prove a positive.

You will also need to obtain Maria's Italian birth certificate along with her father's birth and marriage certificates. You can do so by contacting the comune of Platania, writing in Italian. See these sites for helpful form letters: http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resourc ... /index.asp and http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... tter3.html

The address to write to is:

Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Comune di Platania
88040 Platania CZ
ITALY

You can try emailing: servizio.amministrativo@comuneplatania.it (remove the spaces)

PS: Don't ever mention the Cianflone connection unless absolutely necessary. If the consulate get's wind of it, you will have to duplicate all your research efforts using both names.

Hi Carmine.

Quick question about the USCIS. I did a genealogy search for my GGF which resulted in an A-file but not naturalization paperwork. I requested a letter of non-existence of naturalization records but haven't heard anything yet. I'm wondering if you know if they will provide a letter of non-existence of naturalization even if the ancestor has an A-file on record. (I've gotten a letter from NARA but I am worried about the USCIS).

Thanks,
Gianna

Frank, the ancestry . com family tree belongs to an ancestry member named "rochelleyn" based in Ohio and last logged in over six months ago.

If you don't have an ancestry . com account, you can try a free trial and then just click the link in my earlier message to see the tree. If you would like, I can try contacting rochellelyn on your behalf and ask him/her to contact you via private email. If interested, send me a PM (see the button at the bottom of this message); tell me what you would like me to say and give me an email address where he/she can contact you.

Looking again, I see there are a few others looking at some of the same tree.

Ancestry member "tiossofe", no location given, last log on over six months ago. Click to view family tree

Ancestry member "cwilk55", no location given, last log on over six months ago. Click to view the "Kelley Family Tree

I will get back to you on your USCIS question a bit later.
