Is it possible that Calogera was a second wife for Filippo?

Laura

ok i have set and thought and did math and compared notes, i can only find one problem with this all. we have a marriage for phillip and Corinne from a census to be in 1893 at that time Marie and Lillian ( maria and elizabeth) where not yet born. Philip did not go to america until 1894, maria was born in 1894, so he given the date of marriage and the date of birth i would guess to be her father ( yet she is given the Acarde name when she comes to America in 1897) ok then there is Lillian ( elizabeth) she was born in 1896 which matches up with the records you have found BUT if her mother was married in 1893 and her husband went to America in 1894 how would she have been born in 1896? she is also given the Acarde name in that record so that leads me to beleave maybe she was born from the same father as the oldest two because with the dates they dont add up for philip to be her father, the only one that could be would be Maria. (but her name was not that in the record) also if they married in 1893 why would her corinne's last name be listed as Coronia ( the maiden name i also have ) in the 1897 record when she came to america, she was already married to bontempo. and why would have the girls taken the bontempo name in in 1910 to current as their maiden name?

from what i have read and compared and made noted i beleave this to be how it happened...
***1850- around 1880 philip was married and had 3 daughters, through divorce or death he is no longer married.
***1893 in italy philip marries Corrine who has 2 daughters already from a previous marriage. they get pregnant with a daughter.
***1894 Philip and Margaret come to america
***1897 frances and Corinne some to america with her 2 daughter the child they had together and a new child that has been fathered while philip is away to a unknown(guessing first husband) father.
***1889 Camille (carmela) comes to america.

***1900all three of philips daughter from first marriage marry within a year of coming to america themselves and there for do not live with philip.
***1910 all 4 of corrines daughters now use the Bontempo name for reasons unknown.

ok i tried to type my notes from today so that they are easy to understand what i am trying to say. do they make since?
1.is this the timeline you see in your head while viewing the records you have found and i have shared?
2.does this timeline make enough since even with the last daughters birth bring in question to say that this is how it happened?
3.now with this information how would i go about finding philip first wife and his daughters mothers? is there a location stated on anything? what steps should i take to find a location in italy to write to?
4.same question for Corrine's daughters as the question above.
5. is it normal for children to just take their step fathers name when moving to a new counrty? should i try to look for adoption records that would have a reason behind the name change or was it a normal thing to just change it on your own in a new counrty?

THANK YOU for everything you have done today. just when i thought i knew all about this one branch you helped me discover a whole new angle and had i not my tree would not have been correct. :D

i found the record on ancestry using the dates and ship name you had, i think the link you gave must be for something else. while i was looking it over i noticed right under philip and Margaret is a Giuseppe Accardo age 19 from the same town ( that is the same last name as the other children where given) the name means nothing now but i think i will write that in my notes in case it ever comes up since that is the same name and location.

Elise .
I think that the best thing for you to do now is to contact your Nearest Family History center and ask them to rent the Birth acts microfilm for Gibellina town... you'll be able to find the birth acts for the last daughters born (Antonietta, Maria, Caterina and Elisabetta) if you have their correct birth dates it will be easy to do... so you will see their parents names..

Link to find your nearest center:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library ... et_fhc.asp

link to find the civil registrations - town microfilmed
https://familysearch.org/#form=catalog

just for example, these microfilms may contains the girls birth acts:

authors: Gibellina (Trapani). Ufficio dello stato civile, (Main Author)
format: Manuscript/Manuscript on Film
language: Italian,
publications: Salt Lake City, Utah : Filmati dalla Genealogical Society of Utah, 1986-1994
physical: in 7 bobine di microfilm, 16 mm.

Nati (births) 1868-1869, 1871-1876, 1879-1882 Family History Library INTL Film 1467817

Nati 1884-1899 Matrimoni 1866-1899 Morti 1867-1872 Family History Library INTL Film 1467818

Don't forget that at the time of his arrival Filippo stated that he was coming from Poggioreale (just 15 miles far from Gibellina).

On the ellisisland.org manifest it is line 11 for Calogera and lines 12, 13, 14, 15 for her daughters...
If you want the link to the same manifest on Ancestry.com here it is:

Laura,

After a few weeks of waiting and 4 days of searching through the microfilm i had almost given up, i could find no Accardo with the correct mother and / or father or date of birth. but since other family was from their as well i looked through other parts for other things, while searching through it i found the marriage record for Philip and Corinne (Cologera) Buontempo and it states the year of marriage as 1873, which would make all of the children his, so i am not sure why the accardo name was listed not once but twice, i am still searching for their birth record to confirm this as well as trying to better translate the marriage record i found to see if it list a previous marriage for either, having a hard time with this one as it is not the best hand writing i have ran across, i posted a few links to it in the other part of this site asking for help translating and extracting names and dates and places from it. hopefully someone will be able to get more out of it then i have. just wanted to give you a update on what i had found and see what you thought about this. i am very unsure as to why and how the accardo name came about now. hope all is well

Do you have info on that Guiseppe Accardo? My great granfather was Guiseppe Accardo from that area of Sicily who came to Louisiana in late 1800's. That would also make him the same exact age as my great grandmother who came from the neighboring town of Salaparuta...
