I found Mary Spatz on 1900 census:

I was thinking abt Charles Angelo birthplace: Sagant... on the "g" another "n" previous.. it could be possible that "Sagant/Sangant" means Sant'Agata... maybe Sant'Agata di Militello? here exist Liberto surname....
also the first name Charles Angelo... many sicilians used Charles instead of italian Calogero...
frankly... I cannot understand why the family is not in 1930 census... I searched so much and nothing... no WWII draft registration card... it is a hard search...

Hi!
Suanj, great ideas on Sant'Agata di Militello!
Laura, thanks for checking out Missouri for WWII cards, that explains why it can't be found.
I agree they should be on the 1930 census in St Louis. It's possible they were missed.
I've also tried searching for their son Charles/Roy in 1930 without success.
'murse1973' What year was son Kenneth born?

Thank you suanj!
It was worth the long search
Perhaps there's a divorce record in St Louis County between 1932 - 1940...
I checked the same address in 1930 - they're not there

Hey suanj!
I think it's possible that this is the correct family
Right location
Mary Spatz's first name 'Alice' from 1897 birth record in Cincinnati
Son Charles
It would not have been unusual for Chas Angelo's first name to have been written incorrectly
Birth locations - who knows why they would be incorrect??
It certainly would explain why we've been having trouble locating them
Big Hug

Re: italian name Leber
yes dear Valarie, it is the only possible census... he was italian, surely... but for some reason, declaring himself born in West Virginia in 1940... and so maybe he declared that he was born in Missouri in 1930 census... this family had no easy life ... maybe we can search in Illinois births if the son Charles Leber/Leiber was born really ....

Re: italian name Leber
Thanks Valarie.. I think that maybe also the birthyear cannot be correct: on WWI draft registration card is 1889; in 1920 census: 1886... in 1930 the birthyear is 1897...
I believe that he was born before of 1886...

Re: italian name Leber
Hey suanj,
I agree about his age, he seemed to be sensitive about being older.
On his marriage record he was younger again:
groom's name: Charles Leber
groom's birth date: 1892
groom's birthplace: Italy
groom's age: 25
bride's name: Marie Spatz
bride's birth date: 1896
bride's birthplace: Cin'Ti., O
bride's age: 21
Also,
I'm guessing he may have worked in Ingleside (Princeton) Mercer County, West Virginia when he arrived - from the 1939 Death Certificate birth location

interesting article
http://www.wvencyclopedia.org/articles/924
"With more than 17,000 Italian immigrants in the state by 1910, they made up 30 percent of West Virginia’s foreign-born population... While immigrants were attracted to West Virginia from all over the Italian peninsula, the majority came from that country’s southern regions of Campania, Calabria, and Sicily. Many of the Sicilian immigrants came from the center of that island and were fleeing the depressed conditions in the sulfur mining industry..."
