Munisteri Pino from Racalmuto, Sicily

Post by yankees7011 »

Hello,

I am rather new here. I just stumbled upon this site. I am in the process of getting my dual citizenship, here in Italy. I was wondering if anyone on here has heard of my families surname. It is Munisteri Pino from Ralcalmuto, Sicily. I did find some people on facebook. The person I hired to help me get my citizenship says that the name is rather rare and it is very likely I am related to those people on facebook. But I contacted them, and their English is not that good and I speak no Italian. I will travel to Sicily defiantly next year. From speaking to other relatives, my Great Grandfather, who was born in Racalmuto had like 7 or 8 siblings and 1 sister, so it is quite possible not all of them immigrated to the USA. Any help if you have heard of the surname would be great, thanks :)

Ciao!

Nick

I know some time has elapsed since these posts. My grandfather Salvatore Munisteri Pino was born in Racalmuto around 1888. He emigrated to the US between 1905 & 1910. He eventually graduated from NYU Law School and was the editor of Il Progresso in New York for many years. A dispute has arisen in our family concerning the pronunciation of our last name. Some say it should be pronounced like the French Pin-o and others the Italian version-Peno. I noted that in an earlier post suanj suggested that the name should really be PinA with an accent. I would appreciate some guidance and whether any one knows if the name indicates the origin of the family. If there are any Pinos from Racalmuto I would like to here from them. I visited the town a couple of years ago but did not have the courage to look up any possible relatives.

Hello! My name is Chris Becker and I also stumbled upon this site. Lately I have been using Ancestry.com and I have to say there are so many Salvatore's it gets confusing! My Grandfather was Carmine M. Pino and he also worked at the Il Progresso. He lived in Fort Lee NJ for some time after moving there from Brooklyn. He was married to Olga Aversa and they had two kids, Robert and Diane. Robert is a retired Dr. still living in Fort Lee and Diane is my mom. She's in Florida (big surprise). Its a pleasure to "meet" you!

Oh, and Agrigento is correct. The pronunciation is tricky because Pinos were originally from France (way, way back). They were tradesmen and eventually made their way down the boot and to Sicily. Check out Domenico Pino in Wikipedia. He's related to you...

I am sorry but I have not checked this site in a while. My grandfather Salvatore was born in 1888 and we thought he was born in Racalmuto. You have now cleared that up with the birth record in Naro.

Chris: I knew your grandfather Carmine and Olga as he was the youngest in the family and I think he was born in the US after my Grandfather (I Think he would be your great uncle) brought over his father and mother to the house in Brooklyn. I also met Richard and your mother years ago at Family outings/funerals etc. I think they will remember me. I go by Vic. I am the first son of Rudolph Pino and Joan. He was the third and youngest son of Salvatore M. Pino and was a dentist. I grew up in North eastern connecticut
but now have a law firm in White Plains New York. My email is rpino@pinolaw.com.
As indicated I visited Sicily a couple of years ago and stopped in Racalmuto. I am still trying to get to the bottom of the pronunciation of our name and whether we are truly descendants of the Normans. Great to get in touch with you. Where in Florida is your mother??? I have a place in Florida as well.

Hi Everyone,
I just found this site. My father was Mario M. Pino, the brother of Salvatore and Rudolph. I last spoke to our cousin Jim and his sister Judy shortly after Uncle Sal died. Vic, your father was my godfather. I have been living in the Boston area for almost 25 years.
Attached is a picture my mother (almost 90 years old, living in Fl) sent me. It has our grandparents, parents, Jim, Judy, Adrian, and me. It has been a long time but I still remember the early years. My email is rpino@mgh.harvard.edu. Rich

Post by Richard Pino »

Dear All:

I just found this website, February 17, 2020.

My name is Richard Pino, from New York (Brooklyn and Manhattan). I am in the process of gathering information about Edward M. Pino, my great grandfather. I am trying to secure my Italian Citizenship through my great grandfather. Based on the prior postings I have read, allow me to share information to help everyone. I hope you can return the same.

I am in need of my great grandfather's birth certificate, he was born January 11, 1892 in Racalmuto. This is written on documents that I have in my possession. But, based on information posted below, it seems in relation to his brothers, Edward may have been born in Naro. Does anyone have the name(s) of Churches in Naro or Racalmuto, or a government office that I can find a birth certificate.

Edward M. Pino is also known as Rivaldo Munisturi-Pino. Edward had two brothers that I have been able to trace based on speaking with my Aunt Rachel Pino (youngest of five children belonging to Edward Pino and Caterina Paladino-Pino). Aunt Rachel lived in Brooklyn and now lives in New Jersey, she was born in 1926. She was able to provide some of the information below, and I have documents confirming the other information that I am sharing.

See below for Edward's (Rivaldo) parents name from his death certificate.

Edward's (Rivaldo) brothers were Salvatore Pino and Carmine Pino. Edward and Salvatore both came to New York on September 28, 1904. Salvatore, few years younger than Edward, both came to New York together. The document that I have references that Edward came through Palermo Italy on the SS Seuliana Prince or SS Sicilian Prince (trying to confirm the ships name -handwriting). Both came to New York at the invitation of their uncle (trying to get name).

Carmine was born in New York. Carmine and Salvatore both worked at II Progresso Italo-Americano. Salvatore was the attorney. The newspaper was in business from 1888 - 1988. I read in prior post below that Salvatore graduated from NYU. Salvatore lived on Bay 17th Street in Brooklyn. I don't know what Carmine's role was at the newspaper.

Edward (Rivaldo) was married to Caterina Paladino (became Pino). Caterina was born in Manhattan. The two of them meet in Manhattan on the lower eastside - if recalled properly on Canal Street were she lived. Caterina was 18 when they married, and it is believed that Caterina was born in August 1895 (I will apply for her a copy of her birth certificate). They were married at City Hall. They had five children (lost two prior to the five). The children's names are Lillian, Salvatore (my grandfather born 1924), Eugene, Mario, Rachel (Rakela). Later on in life, Uncle Mario went by Uncle Bill (unknown why).

1) Side Note: My grandfather, Salvatore, served in WWII and was a pressmen in the printer's union, later a union delegate. Uncle Mario (Bill) was a postman, retired, and then was in charge of the mailroom for a large law firm. There children are still alive.

2) Side Note: Edward's (Rivaldo) daughter, Rachel (Rakela) Pino (later Licciardi), was baptized in September 1926, at Church of St. Joseph located at 5 Monroe Street, New York, NY 10002. Even though the family lived in Brooklyn. This was the church of her mother, Caterina Pino, and my great grandmother. The church has gone through many mergers.

Edward (Rivaldo) applied for US Citizenship on January 2, 1924. He petition further shows that a hearing was held in Supreme Court, Kings County, and he was admitted to citizenship of the US on June 18, 1924. He was 32 years of age at the time he applied. His children were young when Edward applied; Lillian-8, Salvatore-8 (my grandfather), Eugene-3, and Mario-2. Rachel (Rakela) wasn't born at the time. The family lived at 2118 Bath Avenue, Brooklyn. The Pino family lived very close to each other in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. Later they moved to 2034 Bath Avenue, Brooklyn.

Edward (Rivaldo) died at the age of 81, in October 1973 in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn (NY) and he is buried in Queens. He was survived by his children and his wife,Caterina Pino. According to his US death certificate his parents names were Salvatore Pino and Linda LaRusson (maiden name). The certificate also references that Edward (Rivaldo) was a maintenance man for most of his working career.

The majority of all family funnels were held at Daniel George and Son located at 1852-56 Bath Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. Daniel George and Son has closed.

Again, I need direction for my great grandfather's birth certificate in Racalmuto or Naro. Does anyone have the name(s) of Churches in Naro or Racalmuto, or a government office that I can find a birth certificate. Further, if you have completed the paperwork to file for an Italian Citizenship through your great grandfather, it would be greatly appreciated if you provide me with direction and forms that you have used. I am trying to avoid any pitfalls as this government process seems to be very long.

Regards,

Richard Pino
