Need help finding info for Salvatore Mancuso

Hi everybody,

I am looking for information on my great grandfather, Salvatore Mancuso. Here is everything I know about him:

He was born in either 1893 or 1894. My dad said they celebrated his birthday on January 1st because Salvatore didn't know his real birthday. He lived in Cosenza in Cassano All'Ionio but I'm not sure if he was born there. He had at least 1 sister who was a nun and died sometime in the 1950s. She never left Italy. I'm also looking for her name.

He married RosaMaria DiPressa on July 2nd, 1912 in Cassano. They had a son Pietro in 1915 before immigrating to New York City in 1920. In America, they had 3 girls: Teresa, Anita and Lucia. He died in 1974.

I am looking for his birth certificate or at least his parents names and/or his sister's name. The only thing I found was the ship manifest when he came to America with his wife and son, and it says his mother's name is Maria Ferrara, but I'm not sure if that's correct.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi there Jackie!

Unfortunately, the records for Cassano all'ionio are not online as far as I can see. But you already have so much information to go on. You can do one of two things at this stage you can contact the comune direct at Cassano at the office of the Anagrafe. If you don't speak Italian there are form letter here to help you: http://geocities.ws/paulanigro/italian- ... tters.html Give them the information you've got and they should be able to easily find a birth certificate for Salvatore and may even be able to find his sister. If they don't manage to find him there the other thing that you can do is contact the state archives in Cosenza and ask for his military draft record. You only need his name and year of birth and they should be able to easily check the registers. If he was born in the province of Cosenza in theory his record should be there and the record will tell you the name of his parents and the location of his birth.

1892 Dec 11 in the town of Cassano all Ionio birth of Rosa Maria Di Pressa daughter of Salvatore Di Pressa age 47 (son of deceased Tommaso Di Pressa) and his wife Angela Maria Francesca Rinaldi
It says in the sidenote she married Salvator Mancuso 1914 July 4th in Cassano

Checked page by page through the 1894 Births in Cassano al Jonio (1893 missing) and only found a Gaetano Mancuso born to Gabrielle Mancuso and Maria Teresa Di Pressa [at image 1044 in the Nati 1894]

however I believe he was born before... because if he was born on 1894, on 1914, year of marriage he was just 20 old... and 21 old if he was born on 1893... however it was the age for military service... I believe that he ended the military service and then married... maybe he was born before... just a my suggestion...
