Can anyone decipher this one?

Post by carogers »

Top left, in reference to the marriage of Antonino Casio la Mariana and Vencenza Giordano. I'm trying to find accurate names for the parents of the bride and any reference to where they live.
I'm a little confused, I believed them to be married on 24 October 1884, but this listing it looks like a different date? I found this in the Documenti matrimoniali 1883-1911
Thanks in advance!

Ok, Why is this date different? Does this one list the bride's hometown? I ask because I cant find my great grandmother's birth record in Chiusa Sclafani.

What is your source for the October marriage date?

No place of birth is identified in the above record. The record is of the Church celebration of marriage, not the civil registration...

The first document Shows 24 September, the second shows 27 October. Maybe the first is the marriage license and the other the actual wedding date? Maybe the first is the actual wedding date and the second the official registration?
Who knows. ;)

I suspect that the first is the marriage banns, and the second is the marriage. These are both ecclesiastical (church) records.

If I'm reading the second record correctly, the banns were published on the 5th, 12th and 19th of October.

The first record comes from a book bearing the phrase "Di stato liberto e di sponsali contratti". Perhaps the first record is a preliminary step to the publication of the banns? Did any churches require a couple to be sponsored prior to marriage?

When a couple wishes to marry they make a request to publish the banns. That record (The Pubblicazione di Matrimoni) has a date that is prior to the actual banns.
As an example - #10 in this image.
The record is dated 2 February; and the banns in the left margin were on 8, 10 and 14 February.

It would appear that the entry into the church record for "free status and marriage contract" is like the request to publish banns.

Stato Libero e Sponsali Contratti means Free State and Contracted Marriages. Perhaps the first date is date of civil marriage.

I believe that Tessa is correct. The first record posted are the actual marriage banns.

The word "sponsali" seems to have different meanings depending on how it is used. In this situation (ie the title of the registry book) I am understanding it to mean "Promessa di matrimonio or Promise of Marriage.
