He married in the US in 1908. I have the certificate from Louisiana. Do you think a photo of that would be helpful?

How do you know how old he was when he arrived? He probably chose a small town to pick from because he was also from that town. In some cases when they used false ID it was to abandon a wife in Italy or because they had committed some crime that US authorities would uncover. Interestingly, he also didn't complete his citizenship paperwork. When the grand-father of my companion's cousin got married in the USA, he gave a false name of his mother back in Italy so that the woman he married in US could not contact his mother in Italy and find out he was already married. None of his children with the wife in the US ever knew anything about him or his family, siblings, etc., for good reason. He hid the fact that he abandoned a family in Italy the entire time he lived in USA and got away with it.

This is a possibility. I'm trying to read the marriage certificate I have right now and it's making me feel totally illiterate  . Can you see the names of those married on the marriage certificate I posted? My main concern would be that his parents might be listed wrong on the birth certificate you posted. How might we confirm whether this is the right Giovanni Bonanno or not?

Unfortunately I wasn't able to find his ship manifest so I don't know exactly when or how he arrived other than what he had claimed on other forms.

This is all interesting food for thought and I wouldn't rule it out. However, how did your companion's cousin confirm that his grandfather had been married outside of his USA family?

Someone in this forum, Adelfio, I think found the correct marriage certificate from New York and he also found a draft registration. Suanj then told the forum that she did a very extensive search for his birth certificate and did find one that matched the information on the marriage certificate except that the name of his mother on that birth certificate was a different woman. She also found his ship manifest, which indicated that he was a married man. By the way, the researchers in this forum are excellent and I would definitely trust what they come up with. They produce some amazing finds.

This marriage ended in divorce after the wife in New York gave birth to three daughters so we think she eventually learned about the wife in Italy. We have recently spoken to her youngest daughter and she says she never knew anything at all about her father or any siblings he may have had and that when they divorced the family moved across the country and they never had anymore contact with this man.

At the time we got all of this information, my companion's cousin was over here in Italy visiting us and he had originally intended to go down to Calabria and obtain a copy of his grand-father's birth certificate. Even if that commune did give him the birth certificate, it was not going to match the info on the New York marriage certificate and no consulate would ever accept these documents for the purpose of Italian citizenship.
