Ancestors of Michael Chudkosky and his 2 wives
Trying to find the ancestors of Michael Chudkosky and his 2 wives. Here is what I know about Michael Chudkosky and his family:
- Born November 10, 1897 in Bassarabia, Russia and died January 1963 in New York.
- Emigrated to US in 1913.
- Married Michelina Marszyska (born 1896 in Brzezany, Austria; emigrated to America in 1920, died about 1930 in Manhattan) on February 9, 1919 in Manhattan, NY.
- They had three children:
- Nicholas - born May 12, 1920, married Olga Freida (1926-1996), and died June 23, 1984 in East Meadow, NY. Do not know if he had children and grandchildren. Served in military June 17, 1939 to September 4, 1945.
- Walter born April 8, 1925 in New York City. Believe he married, but do not know his wife, children or grandchildren. Not sure if he is still alive.
- Joseph (my uncle) - born May 15, 1927 in NYC, married Eufrasia "Frances" Lorusso on December 11, 1949 in Bronx, NY, enlisted with the US Marines at age 16 by pretending to be his older brother Walter from February 19, 1943 to December 4, 1945, died on November 25, 2009 in Columbus Ohio. I know his children and grandchildren.
- After his first wife died in 1930, Michael Chudkosky put his 3 children in an orphanage run by nuns, and returned back to Russia (though my uncle always claimed he was Polish). However, he returned to America. He married Maria Lucniak (don't know when or where). she was born in the Ukraine on October 14, 1905 and died December 1980 in New York. They had two children Helen Elizabeth born January 14, 1932 who married and had children), and Rita born May 1934. Given that his sons remained in an orphanage as their half sisters were born kind of hints that maybe his second wife also didn't want them.

Re: Ancestors of Michael Chudkosky and his 2 wives
Here is a newspaper article from 1963 in the Bronx regarding Walter Chudkosky, father of 6.
He was a patrolman of 11 years. It appears he was involved in a hit-and-run.

On a lighter note, here is a 1960 news clip about the Castle Hill Little League - mentioning Mike Chudkosky - POSSIBLY one of the 6 children of Walter?
6th paragraph in the "Pelham Loop..." article

Re: Ancestors of Michael Chudkosky and his 2 wives
The first newspaper article was not him. He was already dead*, plus if he had been alive, he would have been 65 years old. That patrolman was 38. Unfortunately on the baseball story, I do not know if Walter married and had children. He would have been 35 years old in 1960.
* Mike was born in 1897. His naturalization record states that he was born on November 10, 1897. A Social Security death record for January 1963 has him born on November 21, 1897, so I am not positive if that was actually him. I have seen small date errors before on some SS records where one date matches exactly, and another is off (often the same month and day, but one year off). No relatives were mentioned in the SS death record to help make me certain it was him. Chudkosky is a relatively rare name in the US.

The article is about Walter Chudkosky, not Mike. Walter would have been 38 in 1963, based on the information you have provided about his birth.

Re: Ancestors of Michael Chudkosky and his 2 wives
Okay. I only know Walter's date of birth. I do not know if he married and had children. I would like to know, but there's no one alive who can tell me and I haven't found any civil records on him other than census records when he was still a child.

Re: Ancestors of Michael Chudkosky and his 2 wives
My cousin has verified that this Walter Chudkosky is her father's brother. She had heard the story of him driving drunk and killing someone, but didn't know it was a child. She knows that he had several children, but not their names. As far as her dad and his brothers, this is what happened per my cousin - my dad's mother died when he was very young, like 3 or 4 years old. His brothers were not that much older (still young children). Then his dad abandoned them and went back to Poland. The three boys were left homeless and neighbors would sometimes take them in and feed them. Then my dad had a door fall on his head and it sent him to the hospital. The police got involved and found out that they were abandoned and that there was money from their mother's restaurant. They were able to send all three to boarding schools with that money. But my dad and one of his brothers went to one school and the older brother was sent to another school. Now the three boys not only lost both their parents (one by death and one by abandonment), but they were now torn apart.
Re: Ancestors of Michael Chudkosky and his 2 wives
This article may be Walter Chudkosky's son, Walter (Wally) whose birthdate is listed above in 1955.
It appears he was a champion bass fisherman
From the same area along the Hudson River as Croton.
This could be your cousin's cousin?

Here is a link to the 1940 US Census.
Brothers Walter and Joseph (ages 15 and 13 respectively) are students at St. Clare Academy in Greenburghtown, Westchester County, NY. The census indicates that they lived in the same place in 1935.
Nicholas would have been age 20 at this time, so he would have been out of school by this time.

Re: Ancestors of Michael Chudkosky and his 2 wives
On December 13, 1923, Mike Chudkosky in NY filled out a Declaration of intention, listing his wife that stated he arrived at the Port of New York on November 30, 1913 on the ship - Kaiser Wilhelm II.
However, on June 25, 1929, his NY Naturalization papers, listing his wife and 3 children, stated that he arrived at the Port of New York on October 2, 1913 on the ship - President Grant.
I cannot find any Ellis Island records matching either of that information. The only Ellis Island records that I could find were from 1934, when after a few years of leaving the US and abandoning his 3 children by his first wife, he came back to the US with his second wife and their 2 children, returning on the SS BRemen which arrived in NY on November 8, 1934.

Re: Ancestors of Michael Chudkosky and his 2 wives
Have you tried searching the manifests through the missing manifest option of the stevemorse.org website?
For the President Grant manifest, type in Oct 2, 1913, T715, roll 2190, frame 363 is the first frame for this ship's manifest. Then you can go through the passenger list page by page and maybe you will find him. I don't have time to do it for you today.

Re: Ancestors of Michael Chudkosky and his 2 wives
I went through all the frames (through frame 597) for the President Grant on October 2 and did not find him. How did you figure out these frames for that ship started at frame 363 for roll number 2190?
Re: Ancestors of Michael Chudkosky and his 2 wives
Trial and error. I saw the beg of that roll only had a few ships listed, yet there were hundreds of frames. So I started putting higher numbers in the frame box and hit display. Once I found the ship, I just kept using the minus 4 until I found the beg frame for that ship. Also in the past I found that, if a ship does not appear on the roll where it should be, sometimes it is found on the roll before or the roll after. Even though a bit more time consuming, I've found more things this way than directly using the Ellis Island website.
