Birth record translation

Post by Debn1951 »

Any help translating this birth record for Bernadine Asturia would be appreciated. I believe she was given up by her mother/parents, probably to a church, but I can’t figure out where they got the surname Asturia, which was my great grandmother’s name and is very uncommon in Italy - in fact, I have not been able to locate any other Asturias besides my ancestor.

The baby was left in the wheel for foundlings of the Main Hospital of Messina.
That happened on Aug 20th, 1894.
She looked to be about 8 days old, and wore a shirt, a white muslin cap, a white and "coffee" muslin corsage, and a cotton band. Also, there were five clothes with her. She was in a good health, and didn't have any mark nor identification object on her body. At the Hospital, she was baptized, and given name Bernardina Asturia.

Thank you so much! Do you have any idea why they would have given her the surname Asturia? I literally have found no other records with that surname, other than my great grandmother. 1894 was the year my great grandfather died - his surname was Naviglio, and he and my great grandmother had four children BEFORE they were married, which was shortly before he died in 1894. It just makes me wonder if the Asturia name was coincidental - perhaps my great grandmother was pregnant when he died and couldn’t keep the baby. They lived in Ragusa, but that’s not far from Messina. Is that too much of a stretch? If the child was left as a foundling, could there have been some identification?

It often just depended on the fantasy of the person who chose the name...
