Request for Translation of Birth Record from 1876

Post by angelademeo »

Hi - I'm new to the board (as a registered user!) but have been a lurker for years. I've gotten to the point in my search for Italian ancestors (in order to apply for citizenship via Jure Sanguinis)

If anyone would be able to help translate the names and dates on my great-grandfather's birth record attached, that would be amazing. I know the baby's name is Marino, the father's name is Ferdinando and mother's name should be Marianna Petretta (maiden name).

I'm curious about the other names on the certificate, and also clarification of the date of birth -- is it February 12 1876?

Thanks

Hi Angela

Welcome to the forum! Sorry for the late reply – sometimes first posts take a few days to be cleared by a moderator and then get lost in the queue.

The mother's surname is written as di Meo, not Petretta, and yes the date of birth is 12 February 1876. Here's a loose translation:

Birth Record No 13: Marino di Meo
Volturara Irpina: 12 February 1876 (Date of Registration and in this case Birth also)

Before Gennaro Vecchi, Mayor, appeared Ferdinando di Meo, 35 yo, Bettoliere (Tavern Keeper), living this town. He reported that at 7.45 am, on 12 of the current month, in the house in Strada Campanaro, No 27/217?, from Marianna di Meo, his wife, donna di casa (housewife/domestic), living with him, was born a baby of male gender, who he presented to me (the official – Gennaro Vecchi), and gave the name Marino.

Those in attendance, at the Town Hall, as witnesses to the document were:

Alessandro Cotillo, 47 yo, Sarto (tailor) and Matteo Discopola?, 46 yo, Falegname (carpenter/joiner), both residing in this town.

Having read the present document, the undersigned have signed this agreement with me, except for the declarant, who said he could not write.

Alessandro Colillo, 47, Sarto (tailor), and Matteo

All the best to you for your Citizenship Application.
