Did women often change their first names to Maria? In my research I find that after finding records of the first or second child born to a couple, the next birth certificates have a different first name for the mother. It's changed to Maria, but sometimes Anna. Is this common in official records?

First Names of women
Re: First Names of women
It is often common in general, for men and women, as what is stated in a record is based on a declaration by someone who did not have to show an ID card. As Maria is often part of a female name (Maria Rosaria, Maria Anna...) the declarant, or the person herself, used to say the name that was used to mean such person; we can say there were no "official" names.

Re: First Names of women
If the person declaring the birth was the father we would assume he knew the mother's name. Be careful his first wife didn't die and this is a new wife.
