Can some translate this birth record please?

Post by DelloIacovo »

I cannot read the full names and the street. I see Raffaela Izzo, but I cannot read her middle name. Di Felica?

It is the top birth on this page. http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... 8.jpg.html

Also, if Zolli is recorded as the “house in”, is that the street?

In this case it is the district (Contrada). Normally though you would see the name of the street there.

Birth Act No 25: Raffaela Izzo di Felice (i.e. daughter of Felice)

Registered: San Leucio: 9 March 1877

Appearing before the official was Felice Izzo, 50 yo, contadino (peasant), living in San Leucio, who reported that at 7.30 pm, yesterday, 8 March 1877, in the house in Contrada Zolli (District of Zolli), from himself, the declarant, and from Giuseppa Perillo, 36 yo, a contadina (peasant), his legal wife, living with him, was born a baby girl, who he presented, and gave the name of Raffaela.

The other two names there at the bottom of the record are just people present at the town hall who witnessed the registration proceedings.

Only the official signed the document as the other people present were unable to write.

Thank you!

Would the zolli (district) be a small area? Like a street? I saw my grandparents all had children there.
And is the di felice considered her middle name?

I guess in the timeframe we are looking at, it would be like a little settlement on the outskirts of a bigger town, maybe? I've seen it described as a hamlet, a ward, a village, a quarter of a town? So basically a small area of land like you say, with a few houses. I've noticed that a lot of records where there are "Contrada's", those Contrada's later become known as streets. Maybe someone else can help with a better definition.

"di Felice" literally means "of Felice" so "daughter of Felice". Felice is her father.

because it says "di Felice", instead of "fu Felice", you can assume that Felice was still alive at the time this document was written.

"fu" literally means "was" = "is no more" = "dead"

this is a good thing to remember, and will help you narrow down death dates of your ancestors.
for instance if Felice had two daughters and on their marriage certificate it says "di Felice" on one, and "fu Felice" on the other, you know that Felice died some time in between.

this is especially helpful if you don't have access to the processetti (marriage acts), which normally include more information on parents of the bride and groom.
