tturci wrote: 07 Apr 2021, 19:08 It sounds like Luigia must've given birth to Canuto, couldn't care for him, and asked her father Francesco to take Canuto to the Congregation of the poor?
This seems plausible, especially if she was a widow at the time.
I have not found the death act for Amadio.

ADD:

Here is another daughter, Anna Lugli, born in October 1878
There is an annotation of marriage with Fernando Bertoli in 1901

Anna's marriage (#43)

ADD:

Here is the death act of Amadeo Lugli
#95
Dated 23 October 1881 in Cavezzo
Death on 22 October 1881 at 8 PM in the house in Motta #146.
Amadeo was age 41, farmer, resident of Motta, born in Carpi, to deceased Fortunato Lugli, farmer, and to deceased Anna Sgarbi, housewife. He was the husband of Luigia Turci.

So it appears that Luigia was a young widow (about age 30)

ADD:

Here is the marriage in 1873 of Amadeo Lugli and Maria Luigia Turci
#42 - dated 22 October 1873
Groom: Amadeo Lugli, 33, unmarried, farmer born in Fossoli (of the) Comune of Carpi, to living Fortunato Lugli, farmer; and to deceased Anna Sgarbi.
Bride: Maria Luigia Turci, 22, unmarried, housewife, born and residing in Motta neighborhood of Cavezzo; daughter of living Francesco Turci and of living Vincenza Lugli, farmers.
Publication of banns was made on 13 and 20 July of the current year, resulting in no opposition to the marriage.
At their marriage Amadeo Lugli and Maria Luigia Turci wish to recognize and legittimize with this act of marriage, the child born to them on 14 February 1871, in this town (#24) with the surname Lugli and the names Ercole, Paolino.
http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it ... 7.jpg.html

Here is the birth act of Ercole Paolino Maria Lugli in February 1871
At the time of his birth on 14 February, the child was acknowledged by Amadio Lugli as his son, but the mother chose not to be named (probably because they were not married.)

AND...

Here is the birth of a daughter, Giulia Anna, born 22 April 1874, to Amadio and Maria Luigia

Birth of another daughter, Chiara Lugli, on 20 May 1875
There are two annotations to the record: a marriage in July 1927 to Enrico Fattori, and Chiara's death in Cavezzo on 1 September 1958.

Thanks again for all the information you've gotten me Tessa, it was a family mystery for so long and I feel like I've finally gotten somewhere. Got further with this than my grandfather (Canuto's son) had.

I am curious though, do you think there could be any records of when Amadio Lugli died? This would definitely help when trying to figure out who my great-grandfather's father was. I don't know what happened between Amadio and Luigia (they were married, it's interesting to me that she wasn't a Lugli when she had Canuto).

Do you think Luigia could've had an affair? It's just a total mystery to me. Especially since the mother "did not want to be named" when Canuto was brought to the Congregation. We always knew in the family that his father was illegitimate but we were never sure. If Amadio died more than 9 months before Canuto was born, then we'd know it might have been another man.

That's a shocker...Amadio died 6 years before my great grandfather was born? That must mean Luigia was messing around with another man😂

It must have been difficult for her as a young widow in her 30s with 5 children.

I honestly didn't think of that. Maybe she gave up my great-grandfather because it was a burden? It seems to me she probably didn't have much money either.

That would appear to be the case. Another child to care for might have been out of the question. And it may have been her intent that it be temporary, and to claim him as soon as she could afford to.

To continue...

It appears she had 6 children. Here is a son, Fortunato, born the year before Amadio died.

THEN...

She lost that child at 3 years of age in 1884.
