James Ross - What could be his real name?
Re: James Ross - What could be his real name?
I believe that James parent's first names could be Giuseppe and Maria. I believe he emigrated without parents bu some brother or relative went in Scranton, Lackawanna, PA also.

What I have from my records is his parents are Joseph Ross and Mary Troanna. He was married to Agnes Trancreti. So funny, Anges was alive when I was a child and used to chase me out of her kitchen. lolTessa78 wrote: 11 Feb 2023, 20:56 James was commonly the Americanization of Vincenzo in the US.
His surname could have been Rossi, Rossano or Rossetti. These surnames are found in Avellino Province.
All three are also found in the town of Avellino ...
You would need to know his exact town of birth to find his birth act. Avellino is both a town and a province. Do you have documentation that it was the town of Avellino?
Do you know the names of his parents? Or at the least, his father?

Vincenzo James Ross was a child of Giuseppe Giosa, first son named for his father Vincenzo but based on census records sometime after his 1889 marriage and before 1910 Giuseppe took the name James Ross and his wife Angiolina changed her name to Agnes.I have been trying to find the family in the Scranton area in the 1900 census but no luck so far.

This fellow does not seem to line up with anyone in my family tree. Could this person have died at a young age?
Thanks
Frank

Here is a 1884 ship manifest for a Giuseppe Gioscia, 31. Could this be the correct spelling? Line 183

The right spelling maiden name of Mary, most probably is TROIANO because Troanna is wrong surely, don't exist in Avellino provincefranktroy wrote: 14 Feb 2023, 23:05Hi,Tessa78 wrote: 11 Feb 2023, 20:56 James was commonly the Americanization of Vincenzo in the US.

As I was placing this record in Ancestry on Vincenzo James Ross, it gave me a warning on my GGMs age, that she was possibly not of child bearing year. She would have given birth at age 14. Could there be an indexing error on this one?
Re: James Ross - What could be his real name?
8 days before the marriage of Giuseppe Giosa and Angela Tancredi, Angelo De Roma married Carmela Giosa in Scranton. Perhaps someone here with a subscription can find her Aug 1948 death record on ancestry and the parent info from the marriage record.
The surname could be Gioscia, as above, or perhaps Gioiosa.

Re: James Ross - What could be his real name?
It is weird that the death record of Carmela De Roma in Aug 1948 shows her parents as Vincenzo De Roma and Filomena Giosa. She was a widow, born on Jul 12, 1869 in Italy.

Re: James Ross - What could be his real name?
Hi Frank,
I’m helping a DNA match with her Italian family research. Her grandparents were John Ross and Angelina (unknown surname). According to family notes kept over the years, the Ross family settled in Allegany, NY, as well as McKean County, PA.
Please let me know if you’re interested in exchanging additional information.
Thanks,
Maria
