Valsinni

Post by suecque62 »

My great grandparents, both maternal and paternal seem to be from Valsinni
and I would love more information on that area as I have unfortunately never been to Italy (one day!)

Hello, as I know, Valsinni is a small village and commune in the province of Matera, in the Basilicata region of southern Italy. The village is divided into two parts: the ancient town on top of a hill, and the newer town in the valley. The village has a history that goes back to the 4th century BC, when it was founded by the Lucani, an ancient people of southern Italy. Valsinni was ruled by several noble families over the centuries, such as the Sanseverino, the Prince of Salerno, the Vivacqua, and the Morra.

As for your surnames, Guarino, Mauro, Rinaldi, and Corbino, they are all common in southern Italy, especially in Basilicata, Campania, and Sicily. The surname Guarino comes from the Latin name Guarinus, which means “defender” or “protector”. The surname Mauro comes from the Latin name Maurus, which means “dark-skinned” or “Moorish”. The surname Rinaldi comes from the Germanic name Reynold, which means “powerful ruler”. The surname Corbino comes from the Latin word corvus, which means “raven” or "black-haired"
