finding residence of great grand father

Post by Bobby1 »

Is it possible to locate the residence of a family member who lived in Calanna in the late 1800's?

Do you mean the town, or a specific location/home in the town?

Civil registrations (births, deaths, marriages) often indicate a specific address. Whether that address exists still today is another matter.

If you give us some details like name, date of birth, marriage or death in the exact town, perhaps we can locate it for you.

Domenico Calabrese married to Domenica Giuffre Calabrese born 1859. lived in Calanna.
2 Sons. Giuseppe Calabrese born 26th Aug. 1882 in Calanna. and Rosario Calabrese born 8th Apr. 1884 in Calanna.

Domenica, was my great, great grandmother. Her and her two Sons come to America but Domenico died after being released from Prison shortly afterwards. The story that was told to me was Domenico was convicted of murder after two individuals entered his Butcher Shop to extort a portion of his earnings. I know very little about him, really only his name. Would like to know why he was in prison and where he may of been born.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated

This is the birth record of Giuseppe Calabrese:

https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 40/wRrWbxx

It says he was born in via Sella (or at leat that's what I read)

The same goes for Rosario:

Giuseppe "Pippo" Moccaldi

I was told that Domenico died and was buried in Calanna. maybe even Milanise???. it had to be in the late 1890's to early 1900's. I was told he spent 3 years in prison. I don't know where anyone who would have committed a crime in Calanna in those days would have spent their time. I only know of the two Sons that Domenico had but there is a story of a 3rd. Also there was a Man who came with them that was a cousin, Sam Calabrese.

Here is a POSSIBLE death act for Domenico Calabrese in Calanna in 1898.

#25
Dated 24 May 1898
Death on 23 May at 3 PM
Domenico was age 70, laborer, son of deceased (both) Rosario [Calabrese] and Anna Giuffre.
He was born and resided in Milanesi (this is also in the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria)
He was the husband of Maria Musolino (??)
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 05/5GNoZz6

Records for Milanesi are recorded in Calanna.

EDIT TO ADD:

I checked the death acts from 1890 through 1909 in Calanna. While there were quite a few Domenico Calabrese, but most were children. Yet, I do not think the above Domenico is your Domenico.

When did Domenica and her children travel to USA?

Here is the marriage in 1881 in Calanna of Domenico Calabresi and Domenica Giuffre'
#32
Dated 24 November in Calanna
Groom: Domenico Calabresi, age 23, laborer, born and residing in Milanesi; son of Rosario [Calabresi] laborer, and of deceased Grazia Mosolino.
Bride: Domenica Giuffre', age 21, spinner, born and residing in Milanesi; daughter of Rosario Giuffre' and of Maria Casoleto, both residing in Milanesi.
Banns were posted on 6 and 13 November.
The father of the groom (Rosario Calabresi) was present to give his consent.

Since Domenico was age 23 in 1881 - you believe he died at age 33-43? (1890-1910)

This would appear to be Domenico's birth act in 1858 (he was 23 in 1881) in Milanesi.
Ages given in marriage acts are more accurate that other records since the couple had to produce their birth acts to be married.
This gives a birth on 5 December 1881 to Grazia Mosolino (same as marriage act) and to her husband Giuseppe Calabrese (spelled with ending "e" in this record.) There may be an error in the recording of the marriage act by the clerk, writing Rosario for both fathers...
Birth Act #34.

Doing some research here on my end turned up a couple other things that may help:

The third brothers name was Frank Calabrease, born in Calanna on June 26th 1892 and died here in Kentucky on April 26th 1918.

their was also a sister named mary but I'm yet to get any birth date for her.

Domenico may have died in 1910 according to a letter wrote by a now deceased family member. so I would look at 1910-1912.

I checked the deaths from 1910 through 1919 and came across this POSSIBILITY for Domenico's death.

It is in Part 2 of the 1919 death records in Calanna, #3.
This death is transcribed into the record on 10 September 1919 from a notice received from the official in Palermo regarding the death of Domenico Calabresie age 60, of Milanesi, son of deceased Giuseppe.
No other information was given except that he died in Palermo on 3 September 1919.

And here is the birth act for Francesco Calabrese in June 1892 in Calanna

And continuing from above...

This may be the birth act of the Maria you mentioned.
#6 in 1887 in Calanna
Dated 13 January - birth on 12th.
Father is Domenico Calabrese, 30, laborer residing in Milanesi
Mother is listed as Domenica Sciarro (but I think this is an error by the clerk), his wife, residing with him.
The address is Via Sella, the same as the births for Giuseppe and Rosario, as well as Francesco whose birth in 1892 I posted above.

I think you may have found it, this was sent to me by another user:

Domenica Giuffre

Immigration event date
03 sept. 1920

age 61

marital status: widow

page 14
affiliate line number 0024

I hope the link copies correctly.

how confident do you feel this has been pieced together correctly? now knowing that Domenica immigrated in 1920 and was with Giuseppe (her Son) on that ship.

My Grandfather, Albieno (Alvin), born here in Kentucky in 1914, told me that his father, Giuseppe (Joe), had already come to the US but had to return for some reason to Italy. while he was there he was made serve his 2 years in the Italian Army before he could return. Maybe thats why he's listed on the ships Manifest with Domenica in 1920 one year after Domenico died.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cc=1368704

the only loose ends that I would like to clean up is understanding when and Why Domenico went to prison, how long he was there and where his remains are today.

And do I have any distant relatives left in the area. The Maria you found record of came to the US as a Sharone. Not sure if here husband died before she came over here or not, I will see if any of my family knows the answer to that question.

To be clear...

Domenica Giuffre' was not traveling WITH her son on the manifest you posted. She is traveling TO her son Giuseppe in Blue Gras Coal Company "Hasard"

According to page 2 of the manifest, Domenica had traveled to USA before in '11 and '13, or from 1911 through 1913.

As to the information regarding Domenico's imprisonment and death.
The death record from Calanna states that he died in Palermo. I checked and I do not find 1919 death records online for Palermo.

You are correct and the information would also be correct as Blue Grass Coal Company in Hazard is where they lived and worked. Thanks So much for your time.

Just an FYI - Italian women keep their maiden name.
So when Maria traveled to US, whether or not a widow, she would have traveled with her maiden name. Her children would have traveled with their father's surname.

And most likely, the spelling of "Sharone" is actually Sciarrone. :-)
