Translation for "sciente"

Post by blorelli »

In reading some hand-written death records for the Piacenza area of northern Italy, mid-1800's, I have come across a word which I have not been able to translate. The word appears to be spelled "sciente" and is sometimes found after the name of the witness.

The location of this word is placed similarly to "padre", or "vicino" or "fratello", as in the phrase, ". . . sono comparsi Bersani Giovanni, d'anni ventotto, sciente della morte, domicilato a . . . ".

What is the translation for "sciente"?

See death record number 89 for Gaetano Devoti, with "sciente" after "Casella Fortunato", about 4 lines from the bottom of the first page.
