Grandfather

Post by thomaslupo »

Hello,

My grandfather was brought to America in 1900 he was 2.5 years old. He was traveling with Theresa Soda Not his bio mother. The ship manifest shows my grandfather traveling with Theresa Soda. Listed village Figline Vegliaturo. Is there any way to find out who his bio parents would be, some of my DNA show a name that he could be connected to .
Thanks,

Tom

Can you please post the ship manifest?

Edit to ADD:

This appears to be the manifest... 1900
Teresa Soda, age 32, from Figline. Traveling with Alfredo, age 2.5 years.
Joining her husband Antonio Lupo.
Alfredo is joining his father.

What makes you think that he is NOT Teresa's son, and Antonio Lupo's child?

The manifest reads that Alfredo is joining his father and Teresa is joining her husband (Antonio Lupo?).

Is the place of destination Tacoma, WA?

How do you know she's not his biological mother?

Have you searched for Alfredo in Tacoma (if that's the correct destination)?

This family tree claims Teresa Soda and Antonio Lupo had a son named Alfredo who married Elvira Stokes in WA in 1918. The had a son William born in 1919 married Rosemary Riley.

Do you just mean Teresa is his step-mother? Perhaps a second marriage for Antonio?

At about the same time that Alfredo was born...
Teresa Soda and Antonio Lupo had a child named Francesco Lupo who was "born without life."
It is possible that Teresa then took in an abandoned child for nurishment and care which was common at the time. This child MIGHT be Alfredo.

Birth of Francesco Lupo in March 1897.

We were told Alfred was adopted, I had my DNA done I have no connection to Soda or Lupo. I was researching on another web site and came across a relative of Teresa and we have no DNA connection. Also several of my DNA matches have a Buliano or Beigliano in there trees

Yes, that fits with Teresa taking in an abandoned child, most often a newborn.
She raised the child as her own and brought him to USA when she immigrated.
Formal adoptions were not common.

FYI...neither of the surnames you mention exist in Calabria region today.
Abandoned children were named by the town official and usually given a surname that was a "fantasy" name and nonexistent in the town.

I checked births in Figline Vegliaturo from 1897 through 1900 and did not find any Alfredo born in those years in the regular book of births. Sometimes the abandoned were registered in a separate book of births like the Diversi.
