Isn't it kind of odd for the one record to say she's a property owner, yet her parents aren't known?

Yes, I do think it's very odd. My question is -how did Piraino become part of her surname? It appears to be surname in the town, and normally children that are of unknown parentage are given fantasy surnames or surnames which the town officials invent and arbitrarily assign to them. Children of unknown parentage are not normally given a surname which already exists in the town unless, for example, the natural mother has come forward and the infant is given the mother's surname. I went back and searched the Piraino surname in the birth indices from 1862 to 1865. In those years, I found only two children born with the Piraino surname. These children were born to different couples, but the parents in the 1862 record had the titles Don and Donna and the father was a civile, which was a landowner. The father in the 1865 record was just a villico or farmer. So could someone in the town who was a property owner or landowner have taken Eloisia in and then the surname Piraino got added to her name? Or could a property owner with that surname have been the real parent? Obviously without her birth record, my questions can be construed as misleading, and that is not my intention. It's just that her having Piraino as part of her name raises such questions for me. If her natural parent(s) were already property owners, then she too could have been labelled as one.

I also searched the death records in Petralia Soprana looking for Onofrio's parents, but couldn't find them.

I know this is an old thread so hoping for the best, but do you remember if any of these Piraino couples had the name Michele Piraino or Eloisa Cesare? On Eloisa Piraino's death record in New York her parents are listed with these names.
