All,
I'm looking for some clarity on my 2nd great grandad, Thomas (might be Tommaso or Thomaso) Sciulli. He passed in 1936 in Pittsburgh (6 kids, wife Elizabeth "Bettina" DiNardo Sciulli). I am struggling with his birth day, parents, and potential grandparents. I have the following info on his birth...he was born in Gamberale to a Maria & unknown father, on his death cert his bday is listed as 7/22/1871. Another source has his bday at 7/1/1867, and another has his birth year as 1868 (find a grave).
As for his parents I can 't find a father or maiden/last name for his mother. I'm wondering if the father never came around. As for his mom it's just listed as "Maria" (again on the death cert). All I can find on her potential parents are a Gaetanto (d.1839), who maybe was married to Donata Faloria? Any and help is appreciated. Thanks!
This Tommaso guy…
Re: This Tommaso guy…
There is a related thread for Tommaso Sciulli here.
It includes a link to his birth act...
https://www.italiangenealogy.com/forum/topic/53118
For reference I post it again:
Here is his birth act in 1867 in Gamerale. Date of birth 1 July 1867.
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 22/0Je6RGd
His mother's maiden name was Sciulli, and she was the daughter of deceased Gaetano Sciulli. The father of the male child born to her is unnamed and listed in the birth act as "Padre ignoto"
The child was declared on 2 July 1867 by Carmela Bucci, 32, who assisted in the birth.

Re: This Tommaso guy…
Thanks! What exactly does it mean to say he was “declared by Carmela Bucci”? Like she wrote out his birth act or something else?
Re: This Tommaso guy…
It is customary in Italy for the child to be presented to the town official and declared in order to be officially registered. Usually the father will bring the infant to the town hall to declare. In the instances where the father is not available, the midwife, or someone who assisted with the birth, or a relative (grandparent, etc.) will bring the child. The official having seen the child, will official enter the birth into the registry of the town for that year.
In the cases where the weather, or the distance, makes an "in person" declaration and presentation impossible, the birth will still be declared at the town hall to the official.

Re: This Tommaso guy…
Is there anything else out there for Gaetano Sciulli? I’ve got his death year as 1839
Re: This Tommaso guy…
Looking back at the birth of Tommaso Sciulli...mother is Maria Sciulli, who is the daughter of deceased Gaetano. There is no surname for Gaetano.
In the birth of Maria Sciulli (which I found, but did not post) the father is Getano Marinaro, and the mother is Donata Faloria.
I will find it and post...
And so when looking for the death of Gaetano in Gamberale in 1839 - I found this death act....
#15 - Dated 20 August 1839 - death on 19 August
Death of Gaetano Marinaro, husband of Donata Faloria.
He was the son of "Padre ignoto" and deceased Antonia Sciulli.
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 49/LP8dbnv
It is probable that when Gaetano was born, he was presented as a foundling, so the official gave to the child his name and surname. Gaetano Marinaro.
It is possible that at a later date, the mother was named, hence the use of Sciulli.
This will take further verification.
EDIT TO ADD:
Here is the birth act of Maria Sciulli (she is listed as Maria Sciulli in the index of births for that year).
#29 - birth on 26 June 1837.
She is the daughter of married couple Gaetano Marinaro and Donata Falorio.
https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 59/57lvK4A
Since Gaetano was age 52 at the time of Maria's birth, he would have been born about 1785.

Re: This Tommaso guy…
Oh my goodness this is all amazing. Could there be a birth act for Antonia?!
Re: This Tommaso guy…
Based on Antonia's age (54) at the marriage of her son Gaetano in 1816, she would have been born about 1762. You would need to investigate the availability of church records. These are not found online.

Re: This Tommaso guy…
Guessing those would be found at the church in Italy. I need to go over. Thanks so much for the help Tessa!
