Treviso - adds EL to last names

Treviso - adds EL to last names

I noticed in Treviso or maybe through the north that some last names have an added EL to them. For example,
Vettor or Vettorel
Trevisan or Trevisanel

Does anyone know why? Or are these actually different last names and not related?

Today day are different surnames, but maybe at the start they could be interchangeable.
"el" is a diminutive suffix.
Giuseppe "Pippo" Moccaldi
