Calogero was a foundling. The handwriting in his birth record is difficult, but he was abandoned on the wheel and received from that device by 50 year old Grazia Maniscalco. It was her job to receive abandoned infants from the ruota/the foundling wheel. He was of unknown parents. He was then given to 30 year old Francesca La Rosa. Although it doesn’t specifically say that she was a wetnurse, since the infant was given to her to feed and care for and raise, at least temporarily, she would have had to have been a lactating woman who could breast feed the infant. The date Jan 29, 1843. The infant was baptized on the same day. The word projetto/proietto is what you see in the record. Sometimes this word is used as a surname for abandoned infants. At other times, the infant’s surname is just invented by the town official to whom the infant is presented after birth. It seems to be used as part of his surname, even on his marriage record.

Marriage record dated April 28,1869.

Calogero LaRosa Projetto was age 26, a cordaro (rope maker), never before married, born and living in Sciacca, of uncertain parents, raised by Francesca La Rosa.

Giovanna Scaturro was 28, never before married, without a profession, daughter of deceased Gaspare, a shoemaker, and Maria Scaduto. She was born and living in Sciacca.

Publications were on two Sundays, the 4th and 11th of April.

The two witnesses produced by them were Antonio Cantanzaro, age 60, a landowner, and Aurelio Cusumano, age 60, a servant. The witnesses and town official signed the document, but the spouses did not know how to write their signatures and did not sign the document.

Nell'atto di battesimo della chiesa matrice del 29 Gennaio 1843, si dice che al trovatello fu imposto il nome di Calogero Vincenzo, che il padrino fu Calogero Indelicato, la balia Francesca La Rosa, nata Friscia.

Thanks for posting the info from the baptism record, G. I had tried to access the Agrigento Diocesan website earlier but was having an issue accessing it from my iPad, so I needed a break. Now, of course, I have no issue with it. It’s interesting that the baptism records for the proietti are all grouped together for this parish. I also see that Grazia Maniscalco is listed as godmother on some of the records and that the godfather, Calogero Indelicato, may be the same person as the husband of a wetnurse in another record whose name was Margherita La Pendola. Of course, there’s no clue to the names of Calogero La Rosa Projetto’s real parents in the record. Interesting though is that we now know that Calogero was given the middle name Vincenzo at baptism, and that that name appears as the first name of his deceased father in his children’s birth records. Of course, without an act of recognition made by one or both of his natural parents, I don’t know how to prove that his natural father’s first name was, in fact, Vincenzo. I didn’t see anything in his marriage record related to his recognition by a natural parent.
