Re: Help with marriage record for a DiGiovanna and a Montelione
Hi Mary
Dated July 26, 1875; banns were on the 6th, 13th, and 20th of June and resulted in no impediments to the marriage.
The groom, Alberto Digiovanna, was from Sambuca but dwelling here (SM) since infancy. He had never before been married. Was the son of deceased ? (Can’t decipher the name) and living Anna Maria Palmeri, former spouses (married when husband was alive)
The bride, Giovanna Montelione, never before married, daughter of Leonardo (Montelione) and Vittoria Cicio, spouses.
Witnesses. Michele Ingoglia and Deacon (?) Giuseppe Lo Monaco.

PS, I know you meant to type Belice and not Belize. Been to the latter.

Hi Erudita! How are you? Thanks so much. Those records are hard to read. Do you think Alberto’s father could be Girolamo? It kind of looks like the Italian name for Girolamo that starts with an H. Don’t know how to spell it. Thoughts??? Thanks again. Mary
Re: Help with marriage record for a DiGiovanna and a Montelione
Yes, the Latin name is Hieronymus which can be Girolamo in Italian. Now I can see it.
All’s well here with us.

Erudita, I found another marriage record for Alberto and Giovanna two years later. Why do you think they would get married again? I am so confused. Any thoughts? Thanks so much.

Re: Help with marriage record for a DiGiovanna and a Montelione
Hi again, Mary
The 1875 marriage is a church marriage. The 1877 one is a civil one. After the unification of Italy, the only marriage recognized by the civil state was a civil marriage. So, if a couple only had had a church marriage, the civil state would have considered any children born after the church marriage, but before the civil one, to be illegitimate in the eyes of the civil law. So things like the right to inheritance were affected by only having had a church marriage. Were there any children born to this couple between the two marriage dates? I don’t believe there were, as If there had been, the children would have been legitimized by the civil marriage. But there is nothing in this 1877 document which mentions this.

Wow. Didn’t know all that. Thanks for the information.

To add to this: The issue of civil and church weddings, as described by Erudita, was not resolved until 1929.
