Basilla LoPresti, from Collesano, Sicily-died in New York

Post by Marlena »

Hello, I am hoping you can help read the death record for Basilla that was recorded in Collesano to see if there is a clue to where her husband and theri two children went after her death. I am also trying to find out the name of her child that was born two weeks before she died. Her first son, Vincenzo, was born in Collesano and she traveled to Manhatten, New York where she lived with her husband, Giuseppe Culotta.

Here is the death record from Collesano and the death record from Manhattan, NY is attached.

Thank you so much, Marlena

Unfortunately, the translation from English which was dated June 16, 1910, and recorded in the Italian register, does not yield the info for which you are searching. It gives her sex as female, her color white, that she died in the hospital S. Gregory, that she was married (the name of her husband not given), age 21, occupation housewife, born in Italy, resident in NY one year, daughter of Giuseppe lo Presti, his place of birth, Italy, mother Annunziata Dolce, her place of birth also Italy. The doctor who tended to her certified that he assisted the deceased from the 1st to the 3rd of March 1907, that her cause of death was setticemia, blood poisoning which followed the birth of a young boy, not named, two weeks prior to her coming to this hospital. She was buried in Calvary Cemetery (that’s in the NYC borough of Queens) on the 4th.

There is no mention of where her husband and two living children went after death.

Re: Basilla LoPresti, husband Giuseppe Culotta NEW info

Basilla's husband was Giuseppe Culotta. Found a Part B with2 pages from Collesano deaths. From what I understand he died 17 Dec 1910. Did he die in Collesano or New York? There is a translation, but I don't know if it is correct it says "Valsignano on December 17, 1910 for natural mountain Il Presan Loternon." Would you please let me know what that means?

Here is the death record for Giuseppe Culotta. The preceeding pages are Basilla's death record.

The document says “per morte naturale;”it doesn’t say anything about a mountain. He died a natural death. He died in Collesano.

As to what you’re reading as Valsignano, I think the word near it in the document might be Contrada ( deceased in this contrada???) and it may be the name of a street or area of the town of Collesano where he died. Unfortunately I don’t see any current street close in spelling to it, so it may no longer exist or may have been renamed. I’ve found many errors on family search which volunteers there have deciphered from Italian records.

I’ll be back with a link to current street names there. If you click on show original at the top, the street names will be in Italian

I’m hoping another volunteer on the forum will look at the document and have better luck in reading the document.

I found it. Contrada Volpignano which was one of several Contrada that surrounded the center of Collesano. So that is the location where he died. It was a district or neighborhood of Collesano.

Oh, thank you! I would have never been able to find this out. I appreciate all your research. Now to find out what happened to his two children! Hopefully, Collesano will put more records online.

When the portale antenati website is working, there are post 1910 records there for Collesano, but there are missing years.
