Re: need to affirm back four generations
Thanks to all for the wonderful research, especially finding the city of birth of my ggg grandfather!
Did anyone find the year of naturalization for Frank Figoni (birth year - 1860) on the 1920 census? The one I found shows it to be 1913. Can anyone confirm this, because the 1908 manifest states he is a U.S. citizen?
I'm in touch with the NARA, so maybe this will turn up something as well.
Also, is Figoni essentially the same name as Figone, just a spelling variant? Based on the link provided, the Figone version looks more common. Figoni was not listed on the top 10 names for that region, although Figone was.
Thanks everyone!

Re: need to affirm back four generations
Good work. Without my grandfather's birth certificate I cannot be 100% sure, but I am nearly positive that you have found the correct family. My grandfather and father and brother are all named Frank Louis Figone. I assume the given name Frank comes from Frank Sr. born in 1835/Frank Jr. born in 1860 (Italy), and the middle name Louis, from Frank Jr.'s son, born in 1888 (Calif.), as shown above.vj wrote:For reference:

Re: need to affirm back four generations
My great-grandfather Louis appears to have moved in with the Rizzo's after having married their daughter, Mary Rizzo. I think I have enough evidence to link the family through to Francesco (Frank) Figoni Sr. born 1835, my great-great-great grandfather. Frank Figoni Jr. (abt 1860) is father to Louis. Mary and Louis have two boys: my grandfather Frank Louis Figone (Oct 1910), and Edward, who is four years younger. The 1920 census of my grandfather shows him living with a different father, Jack Grosso, and the 1930 census, yet another father, George Sutro, apparently Mary's third husband. After the 1910 census, my great-grandfather Louis disappears. I wonder if he dies young rather than it being a divorce situation. Can someone verify this? I haven't been able to. Thanks very much.vj wrote:RIZZO

Ciao!
I'm happy that my intuition was right.... I was pretty sure because I know that FigonE last name is really very common in Varese Ligure (as the last name DE VINCENZI)...
There are no FIGONI in Varese L.
http://www.comune.vareseligure.sp.it/index.asp
the number 18 on 235 it means that in 235 Communes of Liguria region you can find the last name Figone in 18 of these communes....
There are in Varese Ligure
83.16 persons with the last name: De Vincenzi
71.28 persons with the last name:Gotelli
63.36 persons with the last name:Figone
45.54 persons with the last name:De Paoli
35.64 persons with the last name:Pietronave
I don't know what kind of dates this site use to determine these statistics but I know that the result is real.....
Have you checked this forum searching Figone last name? I saw right now that there were others persons searching the same last name....
I rembember someone posted also the name of a clerk (a woman) working in the Comune of Varese Ligure that was very kind with a search of civil acts for a member ... but now I'm not able to find this message....
I'll try later....

Re: need to affirm back four generations
Hello VJ, Thanks for all your help up to this point. I haven't been able to find the manifest/passenger list (he arrived 1884-ish) for Frank Figone. You were able to find the one for his eventual wife, so I was wondering if you might be able to find the one for him as well. Chances are he embarked from Genoa and landed in New York. Re: need to affirm back four generations
Ciao Laura! It is the closest match to the census data, and the one I was considering. So for now he is the number one candidate. According to census data, however, my gggf was born Jan 1860 and immigrated in 1884/1885, but there is no one on the passenger lists so far who matches. I am going to do some research today at the LDS Family History Center today; maybe that will shed some light as well. Grazie.
