my grandfather must have used a glider...

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Angelina Fratangelo came alone in the 1908, she was single, and joining at Mariantonia (= Maria Antonia) Fratangelo sister in Lorain Ohio...
pag 1 http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManif ... 0680%2ETIF

pag 2 http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManif ... 1774110189

this could be the first wife of your Antonio Stanziano.....??? from what I know the children was
Joseph John Stanziano M 3 Aug 1910 in Lorain, [county], Ohio, USA
Dominic A Stanziano M 30 Jul 1911 in Lorain, [county], Ohio, USA
Henry Stanziano M abt 1914
--
Angaline Stanziano F abt 1921
Benne Stanziano M abt 1923
Violet Julia Stanziano F 30 Jul 1924 in Lorain, [county], Ohio, USA
Robert Stanziano M abt 1926

maybe Antonio and Angelina married in Ohio and not in Italy... however both the names, Antonio Stanziano and Angela Fratangelo are very popular in Castellino sul Biferno... it is hard to find the right persons.....
however in 1910 census they was married, and in the children list lacking Mary -oldest child; in WWI draft registration card Antonio was widow and the nearest relative is Mary Stanziano daughter.... Angelina declaring that immigrated in 1907, and as years of marriage both declaring 10 years.... Mary in 1910 was 13 months old and born in Ohio ...in 1909......

so the mystery is high.....

yes - very mysterious... as the 1910 census lists the child Joean (John?) as age 9 - so born 1901, and states born in Italy. So he must have traveled with the mother, yes? but his name is missing in the 1920 census so i am assuming he went back to Italy some time before that. I have info that he married Assanta DeFrango, but had no children. he died August 26, 1958 in Castellino del Biferno

*sigh*

Giovanina can translate into Jo Ann or Joan in English. Is it possible there was also a daughter?

i am believing anything is possible at this point - but the story we were always told is that Grandpa had a son with his first wife and that he was not able to come to this country because he was disabled. The disability was never explained as to what. When I found the 1910 census with a Joean on it, it really took me back. Now, with all the different Antonio's and stuff mentioned in this thread - i'm even wondering if that is my grandfather, lol.

Dontcha just love researching genealogy stuff? keeps the mind young (and tired)

I truly appeciate all the responses i get. I will check out as much as I can with my aunt, age 87 - and uncle, also 80s. I just lost my father on May 24 who was 85). As you can see by that - i really need to put some more questions together and try to see if they can remember differently than what they grew up believing!

Mary is again Mary, but Giovanni( Joseph John Stanziano) is only Joseph and not Joan/John... Dominic is Dominik, well.. lacking the Henry ... is the above children list is right, Henry born in 1914... where is? all children listed in 1920 are born in Ohio (???...)

Yes, this is correct - his first wife (Angeline) died in 1917. He remarried in 1921 (Maria Amelia Fortunata) ... all children as you listed are correct and known. The unknown child (Joean) is only listed on 1910 and was the only child listed as born in Italy. Antonio probably should have been listed as widow. I also have the 1930 census and Joean is also not listed there - but the children from 2nd Marriage are listed.

:) appreciate all you are doing!

i'm certain he went back to Italy, I found his marriage & death there at Libby's site.

The surprise was that he was here in the first place - if indeed that is a "him" - i am not so sure anymore, lol.

I wish that this were the only "mystery" in my family history!! I'll not post more, so i don't take much of everyone's time. Also, this sort of turned into a genealogy thread vs. the immigration information - sorry, everyone!

thank you, Laura
