Re: need help w/ information
this is right manifest; Vincenzo already in USA from 1896/8 so matching with Biff manifest find of 1896... now I understand: Vincenzo Mingione ( on 1900 ship's manifest really is wrote Mincione, transcribed Mirrione) from Gimigliano made the first trip with Francesco Catone; making friendship.....vj wrote:More clues?

surely the marriage was arranged and Vincenzo back in 1898, wedding, birth of son, and newly with family in USA; Francesco Catone was born in Formicola; so I believe also of Maria Catone; Vincenzo Mingione was of Gimigliano ( Calabria region); the little family resident in Pontelatone... both the ship's manifest are correct.... good find!

Re: need help w/ information
Hello to everyone involved in helping my family. I am Lin Mitchell, married to James J. Mitchell. You have been helping my daughter and she suggested I come into the disscussion also.
My husband James has hardly any knowledy of his grandparents. We have been married for 38 years and he has been trying (when he has the time to find "answers"... He was very young and does remember going to someone called (nonnie) (maybe his grandmother?). Remembers having soup at her home that was very, very hot.
His father could speak Itallian but never taught him, his father never spoke of his family. There is a belief somthing in the family happened and none of Mary and James' children spoke of them. My father-in-law was born in Plattsburgh, NY in 1901 to James Mitcheller (thats how it was spelled on birth certificate) and mother was Mary Catone, Both from Italy.
We know James was employed by the railroad.
My husband would like to find any information about his heritage. He would like to know where his grandparents are buried, why the name is "Mitchell" change his name to what it should be.

Re: need help w/ information
Nonnie is Italian for grandmother, although technically speaking, it is
Nonna = Grandmother
Nonno = Grandfather
and I believe "Nonnies" refers to the plural......someone correct me if am wrong here on the plural...
I also called my grandmother Nonnie.....never Nonna.

Re: need help w/ information
I suspect the name Mitcheller was the work of some lazy transcriber who just wrote what the name sounded like instead of asking for the proper spelling or asking him to sign his name. I suspect the name may have been MICELLI or MICELLA. Certainly there is a Catone in 149 cities,towns and villages in Italy. Go to www.gens.labo.net/en/cognomi and put in the Catone name in the upper left hand corner and click.
Now hereis where you have to work hard.....In Italy most records are only found in the city, the town or even a small village of origin with duplicates inthe provincial capital BUT BUT you have to know the town of origin to find the records.
If you know when Mary Catone arrived in the USA and her whiole story then get back and let us know what you know about her and her husband. You know more thanyou think and yourfamily oral history has all the information which we need down to old opostcards, postal stamps on photographs indicating the town or the photographer, the saint on the feast day in Italy to whom they prayed to..names of boats, when did they become naturalzied US citizens and where....
Oncwe we have that information your on your way but DIG WE MUST!! =Peter=

Nearly right wldspirit...
In fact the word 'Nonnie' would be an anglicised nickname for a grandparent.
The word 'nonni' means grandparents (plural) in Italian.
If you think education is expensive - try ignorance!

Finding James and Mary on census records doesn't seem to be a problem.
Finding your father-in-law William Paul Mitchell in the same household is a problem
- if we have the correct census records.
Do you know the names of all of your father-in-laws siblings?
It may have been possible that several of James and Mary's children
were placed in a children's home if they had trouble carring for them.
It was not uncommon and happened in many families.
Thank you!
