I am seeking information for an associate regarding her g-g-grandparents Loretto Arena (b. 1865) and Rosaria Oliveri from Agrigento Province (possibly from Eraclia Catolica).
The couple took in two orphans: Filipo (b. 1882) and Sofia.

Good afternoon suanj.

I am told that Filipo (Phillip) Arena was adopted and subequently changed his surname to Cummuta after he became of age. The other orphan Sophia retained the Arena surname.
Perhaps this may be of help.
The Arena men in my wife's pedigree were by and large sulfur miners from the province.

Perhaps these adopted children were the relatives of miners or had met an untimely end or whose parents might have passed due to infectious disease.

so, maybe Cattolica Eraclea is not the birthplace; I searched again in Cattolica Eraclea births and nobody Filippo Arena was born in 1882/3..

In Filippo ship's manifest he decalred of to join at uncle Giovanni Battista Oliveri in Chicago; also Giovanni Battista was born in Altavilla Milicia:
Birth: 15 Jan 1876 - Altavilla Milicia, Palermo, Sicilia, Italy
Death: 17 Mar 1949
Parents: Vincenzo Oliveri, Gaetano Principato

so it is very possible that also Filippo birthplace was Altavilla Milicia and not Cattolica Eraclea...
