Italian Great-Grandmother Mystery

Post by samdemuro »

Hey all, I appreciate what you're doing on this forum so much! You're really changing people's lives and perspectives as you help people learn about their his(her)stories. :)

Does anyone have any information about annulled records? I am having the HARDEST time finding any information about my great-grandmother, Maddalena Sandomenico of Sarno, Italy.

Apparently the parents of Maddalena (names unknown) came from two different classes, so their parents didn't approve of their marriage. Supposedly their parents got the marriage annulled, leaving my great-grandmother Maddalena a "bastard" child. If they got the marriage records annulled, is there a chance her birth records would have been deleted as well? I can't find any information on the names of her parents, or any record of her existence in Italy. I found her passenger record to America and a census of her in NJ, both records estimating her birth year to be 1867 and born in Sarno.

I recently contacted the Province of Salerno and the Comune di Sarno to request any sort of record of her but they responded saying: "In riferimento all'oggetto si comunica che da ricerche effettuate non risulta allo stato nessuna Maddalena Sandomenico NATO NEL 1867 o 1868 e vissuta a Pagani."

Any advice on where to go from here? There are records of SOME Sandomenico relatives in Sarno but I have no clue how they might be related. :(

I don't think they destroyed her birth record even if her parents didn't recognize her there would still be a record of birth and the civil official would have named her. This Carmine and Teodoro listed in the military registration records is a good chance of them being her possible siblings I checked 1863-1873 only male Sandomenico in Sarno listed and they have the same parents

Nome: Carmine Sandomenico
Classe: 1869
Comune di nascita: Sarno
Full text: Carmine Sandomenico son of Cherubino Sandomenico and Gaetana iovino birth 12/26/1869 a Sarno

Nome: Teodoro Sandomenico
Classe: 1871
Comune di nascita: Sarno
Full text: Teodoro Sandomenico son of Cherubino Sandomenico and Gaetana iovino birth 7/25/1871 a Sarno

I do not know if you have this...
An arrival manifest in 1910 for Maddalena Sandomenico (43) and her son, Alfonso Ferrante (23).
Page 1 identifies last residence as Pagani. Page 2 identifies Maddalena's place of birth as Sarno, and Alfonso's place of birth as Pagani.
On page 1, Maddalena leaves her father, Alfonso del Mastro in Pagani at Via Carmina 29; and Alfsono Del Mastro is also identified as the grandfather of Alfonso Ferrante.

You might write again to the Comune of Pagani to request a birth act for Alfonso Ferrante (b. about 1887), and a Publication of Marriage Banns for Raffaele Ferrante and Maddalena Sandomenico. Those records should give you information.
