Translation of Death Record - Vita Gandolfo

Post by Road2Gandolfo »

Hoping someone can check my translation of the death record below. I "think" it is mostly correct but would love someone to confirm.

Name: Vita Gandolfo

Record: Page 55 of 116, Number 830

https://antenati.cultura.gov.it/ark:/12 ... 68/w1z7nN6

My attempted translation:

The year one thousand eight hundred and ninety-eight, on the twentieth of November at eleven o'clock, in the Town Hall. Before me Paolo Pugliese, secretary at the third division, delegated with the deed dated 31 July 1892 already approved by the civil status officer of the Municipality of Marsala, appeared Gandolfo Vincenzo, thirty-two years old, carter, domiciled in Marsala, and Ingoglia Vincenza, fifty years old, villager, domiciled in Marsala, who declared to me that at 10 pm yesterday, in the house located in Villa Cappuccini, Gandolfo Vita, two years old, duly registered and already active, resident in Marsala, born in Marsala, died, by Vincenzo, carter, domiciled in Marsala, and by Francesca Arini, housewife, domiciled in Marsala. Present as witnesses to this act were DiLeonardi Onofrio, thirty-five years old, Saguista, and Diego Pellegrino, sixty-two years old, Becchino, both residents of this municipality. Having read this document to all those present, they declared that they did not know how to write and therefore it was signed only by me

Edit to Add:
I wasn't sure about "twenty days" but can't think what else it might say there. Do you have the birth record? None of the other death records pertaining to children that I looked at were so specific to the actual number of days, although I have seen this in other towns I've researched. Do you have her birth record? How did you come up with what you have translated there? Anyways I'm sure others will take a look and correct any errors.

Here's Vita's birth record in case you don't have it:

Birth No 459 – Vita Gandolfo

Registered in Marsala on 1 March 1896

Appearing before the official was Vincenzo Gandolfo, 30 yo, Carter, living in Marsala, who reported that at 4 am on 27 last month (27 February) in the house in Via Dietro Cappuccini, no number given, from Francesca Arini, his wife, living with him, was born a baby of female sex who he presented to me, and to whom he gave the name Vita.

Witnesses to the registration proceedings were Michele Donato, 24 yo, villico (Tenant Farmer), and Antonino Provenzano, 47 yo, pecoraio (shepherd), both residing in this town.

Having read this document to all those present, they declared that they did not know how to write and therefore it was signed only by me.

It helps to verify my interpretation of what was written on her death record re her age when she passed.

I am so glad I asked for help on this! I used google translate but am unable to repeat it with the same result. Now that I see your translation I can see it appears to be "aged two years, eight months and twenty days. It is very close to the date of birth of February twenty-seventh. Thank you for the birth information. I attempted to translate that also and had the month of March incorrectly transcribed as May. Many thanks for taking the time to locate and transcribe the additional document

My pleasure. You are very welcome for the help. :D

Re: Google translate, while it has it's place, it doesn't always interpret correctly, so can be misleading. If you are not sure of something, just post it here and someone will help with the script and/or the interpretation. I think you are doing really well with locating the records and reading the script.
